A question to start on Nikon system or Canon systemn

I was a Ex Canon 10D DSLR user and got mixed up with the pros and cons of both camera system from Nikon & Canon mount. As I wanted to maximise my investment so i took a painful system switch.

But after many comparisons, I ended up using Olympus E-1 due to:
1. Lighter weight factor,
2. cheaper in general to cover 28-400mm in just 2 lens with ED element,
3. Zuiko Lens has less headache in choosing lens as there are limited choices :( but atleast Lens range cover almost everythings.
4. E-1 Body and Lens are all weather seal and dust free on CCD too.
5. Wanted Nikon Prosumer DSLR but D100 & S2Pro just not what i want in spec,
6. Canon 1.6x lost quite a lot on wide angle on all their present lenses.

Both Nikon or Canon got pros and cons. See which one serve more of ur needs than decide.

Personally I will opt to go Nikon mount because,
1. Nikon already fixing their sensor size with 1.5x FLM. and made 2 Super wide Mid-tele zoom lens(e.g. 18-70mm DX lens). Ignore this line . if you enjoy mounting / unmounting lens all the time. :D

Canon can only win my heart back if it come out with DX lens that cover 28-100mm(in 10D) lens on EF mount not EF-S mount.

Just my newbie 2 cents thought. :embrass:

My question :-

For basic set up for a start, like a 70 -200mm, a 50mm + kit lens and flash, I heard that owning a Nikon system is more expensive. Is it true?

If you want to start off with a affordable lens kit
the 50mm f/1.8 and the 70-300mm f/4-5.6G, are the 2 cheapest lens but are pretty good.
Both together costs less than $450.

Add in the AF-S 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 DX bundled lens and I would say you have got Wide(18mm), Standard and Tele (up to 300mm) all covered and even has a 50mm f/1.8 for Portaits.

For flash, you can get the new SB-600 with D70 though I am not sure what's the price though it is cheaper than the SB-800.

Thanks v much. winston. I am now just waiting for D70 to be released and someone like Phil to review it before jumping in.

AJ123, we buy from whoever is cheaper/reliable.

if you say all singapore stores sell the CANON EF 14mm f/2.8L at $14k, when you can buy overseas at SGD $3k, who will you buy from?

its not as though consumers are stupid... 8)

Heehee, then you think Canon Singapore is stupid to price the same lense with such high difference? ;) ;) ;)

Anyway, I don't buy EF lenses... :D :D :D

Both system are good.
It's just that you want to be Nikonian or Canonian. :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

canon user speaking here.

things to consider:
nikon's 3d matrix colour metering - there's no contest from canon for this.
range of lenses - both are similar, just need to know the price point for each
software - canon's raw workflow is incredibly slow
flash - nikon's system is a lot better, not to mention the metal mounting shoe
lenses - canon has more lenses that has USM, nikon's AFS lenses cost a bit more (correct me if i'm mistaken)

Investor point of views:
Canon:
- High cost when you buy (slightly lower than Nikon) but command a much more lower value when you want to sell
- Canon products replace itself without considering the users point of view, eg D30 replace be D60 in abt a year+, D60 replace by 10D in abt 9mth, then 300D is out thus the D30 now only commands a value abt $1200 at most!!!
- Understandable that Canon lenses also can be replaced, newer models of camera may not be able to use the older version of lenses.

Nikon:
- A very much high cost when you buy but normally also there is a great demand in the 2nd hand market. Depreciation is very slow, abt 30%-40% even after the 5years. Eg, new F5 body, new cost $2900, 2nd hand abt 3-4yrs old cost $2200.
- Professional camera bodies like F5, the replacing model is about 10yrs. Eg F3 to F4 abt 10years, F4 - F5 abt 8-9 years different
- Maintain downward compability for lenses, current latest Camera bodies like D2H can still use AIS lens which is manufactured abt 20years ago.
- When Nikon comes out a new camera body, they will input the best technology they research, thus the body will definitely last the camera life. Just like F5 uses colour matrix, and this is manufactured 7years ago... Till date even Canon top-end model EOS1Ds still does not have this technology.

Ultimately the decision is still yours, most importantly is which camera you prefer? Rather than which I should invest? Cos what for in getting a camera which you don't really like just because of the reviews of others saying it is good and worthwhile at a certain point of time. You must decide this carefully as the choice of turning back later would be a painful one. Reasons being me for saying this is because I switch system once from Minolta to Nikon. :)
