That i agree, really need someone with talent to construct a lens. At least body is much more on electronics, lens is really hardcore optics....
I doubt even the prof at NUS specialising in optics knows how to construct one...

i think the word "talent" is used wrongly by him lah..
hmm..or maybe he thinks using DSLR really need talent?:dunno:

Perhaps TS should use 'experience' instead of 'talent' since he's been using
PnS for quite a while to justify him wanting to 'upgrade' to DSLR.
Totally Support this suggestion.
Talent shouldn't be hampered by useless tools like those D-"double-digits"...

yes i think the TS just means that he believes he can move on from a PnS (which can also take nice pictures!) to start appreciating and controlling more manual functions like Av, exposure etc, and feels limited by what he has now to want to move into DSLR?
Actually i think no need talent, just need the interest in photography and enough $$ to start off.
Might be wise to read reviews on www.dpreview.com and many other photog sites for a start on the cameras, list down the terms that are mentioned that you don't really understand and things you might need to know(i remember my early struggles with the differences of different lenses and aperture sizes on depth of field, bokeh, what is a good range of lens for your needs etc), and google/search the threads and ask questions. By then if you feel the fire still burning strong to get a DSLR, you should start comparing the specs of the entry level models (I'm a Canon user so i believe should be 1000D/450D/40D/50D range to start), check the forum for things people who own these cameras bring up and their sample shots and their setups, go to a shop and fiddle around (some of the good ones are listed in the buy and sell forum, like MS color, Cathay Photo, Alan Photo, Orient Photo, John 3:16, TK Photo etc)... don't feel compelled to buy yet. if you roughly narrow down to a few models, check out more posts in the forums for these specific models, such that you already understand 50% or more of the camera by the time you get it... i actually suggest getting a 2nd hand one in the buy and sell forum (of course there might be some risk there but i believe many people here deal on the BnS forum with enough satisfaction) cos i realize that's a great place to start off for cameras and lenses at a fraction of the cost (sometimes even around 50-70% of cost of buying new), so that even if you make a mistake, the damage is not as great.
oh yah, and if you have friends who own these cameras, talk to them for feedback and ask to try their cameras. be wary that people from one camp or the other might not give a balanced opinion so you have to judge for yourself?
Guess you have to balance the need to future-proof (your camera can meet your needs for longer as you develop) and budget.
Just my own 2cents, you have to hear from the other more seasoned users. good luck!

Actually, judging by many of the posts (type of questions, spelling, etc) I do believe that many members here *are* actually still in primary school. :sweat:

Anyway to the T/S, again which area does your interest lie in? Streets? Candids? Portraits? Landscapes? Travel?
Having a DSLR does not mean good pictures. I have learnt that by self-thrashing and trashing numerous pics. I have seen a colleague of mine snapping a brilliant landscape shot of Japan using a Canon Digital Ixus. Each genre has its quirks. The thing is find out where your interest is in first and work towards it. Getting the camera is a second step. The first step is what is it you want to take.

With your new found talent, camera is really just a tool to showcase your talent. I don't think the brand matters. knowing how to manage your talent is more important. Do you need a manager?

I have managed to rent a Nikon D60. Will pick up this coming Sunday which I will be shooting my daughter's birthday on Monday. Will definitely post my photos then.
I think I'll start off having to feel a Nikon first and probably head on down to one of the shop to feel a Canon before deciding.

Ok, all the suaning aside, yes! This is the way to start! Keep it up! But like what scandal said, identify what u wanna shoot first, then go and rent for both brands and see which one is better for your shooting style.
After all all equipments have their pro & cons. From user interface to noise control to AF and whatnot. So take both out for a "test Drive" and u will soon realise what u really want.:thumbsup:

photography isn't really about talent or not. in the end, for many here it is a hobby.
that said, if you want to improve, you have to be honest with yourself. otherwise you can always join buddy groups and engage in mutual praise. have fun!

I think renting a D60 somehow limits yourself, shd have try out the D90 and above least the AF works on older AF-D lenses.

Actually, don't worry about whether got talent or not...
Even people like me who have zero talent also has a dslr hehe...
But on a serious note, I was also deciding between canon kiss 2 (maybe different name lcoally) and nikon d60 for my 1st purchase when i was overseas. i also asked in other forums and they advised me to go to the shop and try out both models, instead of just deciding based on tech specs alone. So i went and handled both, and found that i liked nikon's design and ergonomics better. Somehow i felt nikon was what i was looking for. So here I am now
