A different kind of portrait on a rangefinder

Hey guys!

I'm new to Rangefinders! I got my very first one last Friday and have been playing with it every day since Saturday! I absolutely cannot get enough of it... If I could sleep with it under my pillow, I would :bsmilie:

My first impression of this camera (being a total virigin to rangefinders ... it was literally my first time to use one last Saturday... I had to read the manual diligently from cover to cover) was beyond explanation! I shoot on Canon 5Ds for a living using a variety of lenses (50mm 1.2, 85mm 1.2, 24-70mm 2.8, 70-200mm 2.8) and yet I have never encountered anything as awe inspiring as my new Leica system! The rendition, the way it captures light and shadows in all different shades and tones, the way it captures light on the human skin, the depth of the image, the creaminess of the colors etc etc are just something I have never seen before. I literally am slowly losing interest in shooting with my Canons which I used to love so dearly! If I could only own one camera system for the rest of my life starting today, it would be my M9 and my 35mm Lux... It's all I really only need... and a fresh pair of underwear hehe

Before I go to to the real point of this thread, I'd like to share with you some of the first EVER photos I took with a rangefinder

This is the first ever photo I took. The shot is not much! It's just the first thing I saw when I stepped out of the store where I bought my SD card for the camera. I just wanted to take a quick shot with my new toy just to see what it would look like! But with this first shot my eyes knew I was dealing with something different. The way the camera captured the different gradients of light was just so organic

This is the second pic I took. Again nothing much.. just a pic of my son reaching out for a toy. But I was once again amazed at how the camera rendered the fur of the toy at 100% crop

Then my first portrait of my wife and son which was in pretty low light

And finally this shot I just took of a bathroom... but it was also the shot that convinced me that The Leica was special in capturing light

I knew I had to do something more with the camera later on in the afternoon!

Anyway, stopping my diarrhea of the mouth now and fast forwarding to the afternoon session of that same day. The morning session got me so excited about the camera that I just had to take some pics of one of my favorite subjects... guitars!

So here are a couple of my guitars! They're scarred from years of playing in and out of bars, but they're still beautiful to my eyes.

This is a Johan Gustavsson Bluesmaster

So there, I hope you guys enjoyed this different kind of portrait. If you have a "different kind of portrait" that you would also like to share, please share them in my same thread. I don't mind at all

Oh yeah, comments and critiques are much welcome!

I used to shoot my Canon gear (1D/L lenses) about 95% of the time... Then I went Leica and now shoot Canon about 5% of the time! This started in 2008... :D

Congrats on the new setup and thanks for sharing your photos.

Welcome!
I can't feel your excitement and....no...you will not be happy with just the M9 and the 35 Lux:)

Thanks Wong!

I know it will be tough to resist!! I'm such a gear head :o I also have a 50mm Cron Pre-ASPH that I bought but haven't tried yet. That should be fun too :)

welcome! you are on a slippery slope...pretty soon you will want to have a film body as well...hahahaha!

Great sharing bro!

And then you start to wonder what's all the romantics going about with analog film M? ...the cloth shutter, the advance lever, a different "sensor" with every new roll of film, the pleasure associated with the process of making images blah blah... and then some screw mount lenses, sonnars? 0.65m min focus? Leica glow? black paint?...... the gradient on that slope can be as slippery as it gets! lol... Meanwhile, enjoy the 9 and let's see more lovely pics soon!

like wat raytoei & newghost said u have yet to taste film yet *lagi shiok :rbounce:

anyway WELCOME; good to hear more dslr-ers are into RF.

i used to shoot with fixed lens RF... but that were never enough and sold them all to upgrade...

i have slipped and now down on the slope!!!

my M5 and 50mm cron V3 is on the way from Germany!

welcome to the world of RF bro!!!

Welcome to the RF family!

Hi friend, welcome, congratulations and nice shots!

Judging from your impeccable taste with that Gustavsson and that beautifully aged gold-top, I'm sure you'd want an analog M too.
Shooting film is just like playing through a tube amp... it's even more organic...
Shooting film on an M like playing on a vintage burst through a Dumble. Good luck!

RFs I think are one of the best kept secrets. After trying one, I'm surprised there are this many DSLR users!!

Thanks to you and Redsun for the warm welcome :)

Hello friend!!

Thanks for the appreciation! Are you a musician too btw?? You seem to know your stuff with the JG, aged gold top and tube amps! Hell you even know about the organic tone of bursts and Dumbles!! Organic Analog, there's no other way to go IMHO! Looks like I'm in trouble :o

PS. Just in case you wanted to know, the goldtop is a 1954 goldtop converted to 57 spec... the best les paul I have ever played in my life

Si beh, si beh jialat :)

Its a slope, and when you think you've reached the bottom, the lust builds on the slope upwards again....

Don't listen to them. They will brainwash you. Haha. I started with a borrow M9 from my bro. Than I got myself a M9P. Now is playing with a M4. It will never get any ending in Leica rangefinder. Enjoy it man.
