80-200mm f/2.8D AF-S

Considering that production stopped in 2003, that means the youngest AF-S 80-200 is about 9 years old. The VR I seems to be your best option.

in any case, its quite the lens. it matches the 70-200 VR II, but doesnt have the vignette and corner softness issues, doesnt have the focus breathing issues. colour and contrast are very snappy.

I think you meant the VR I here. Because I have used both and the VRII outclass the 80-200 AF-S in every way other than focus breathing.

I see. I doubt Nikkor lens had those lens codes Canon had to determine the year of production right?

If that's the case, I'm kinda forced to go for the 70-200 VR I then :dunno:

The VR1 would be easier to find and get.

The AF-S "easily spoil" problem is isolated to the 80-200mm AF-S itself or it is more of due to aging of the lens? Or is it design of older AF-S lens like 28-70mm?

Not really. I have fixed a few of these lenses (80-200/2.8 AF-S and 28-70/2.8 AF-S) with AF problems.
The usual cause, flexible cable adhesive coming off or focus mechanism needs cleaning and lubrication.
Recently, I discovered that the SWM (including the compact type) can be refurbished ;)

Hi fatigue, that's some interesting info. I've a AF-S 28-70mm on hand and just returned from lubrication (due to a little squeaky noise). May I know usually what's the lubrication cycle for the SWM motor?
