7D or 5D Mark III?

thanks. i guess what i like to know is 5d3 has the ease of taking quick/fast shots as little kids tends to run around very fast

According to what I read 5D3 is using AF system from 1DX... if it cannot track/focus quickly kids, I think something must be terribly wrong...

7D have burst mode of 8 FPS

The FPS for both the 7D and 5D3 are as follows:

7D: 8 fps
5D3: 6 fps

Obviously the 7D at its optimum level is the faster of the two cameras and on the surface looks to be the better of the two to capture toddlers' movements. However there are many other considerations including:

i) whether flash is to be used
ii) will the camera be used indoor or outdoors
iii) ISO and low light capabilities of both cameras

Both cameras are more than capable to capture a toddlers' movements given the right environmental factors... the 2 fps advantage of the 7D really won't make that much of a difference. However there are several other factors at play than just FPS. Here is a quick example of why I've come to this conclusion:

You're indoors. Lighting is not optimal. You decide to not use a flash. The 7D is reasonably good to a maximum of about 1600 to 3200 ISO. As a result your shutter speed is hovering at 1/40 to 1/60 seconds. How many photos of a quick moving toddler can you expect to get at 8 fps? Conversely, the 5D3 is reasonably good to a maximum of 6400 to 12,800 ISO. As a result your speed is hovering at 1/100 to 1/250 seconds. With good panning techniques you will likely have more keepers.

Of course there are many others factors involved but I just wanted to illustrate that one cannot make a decision based on only one criteria such as fps. Over-all, the 5D3 is the better camera. I've owned both and really liked each for what they could do. But the 5D3 is definitely the more capable camera with it's professional focusing system and low light capabilities.

Play with Shuttle speed do helps.

Capturing the moment and taking fast/quick movement of kids is more of knowing when to presss the shutter release button than how many burst your camera can handle.
You need to have a keen eye and knowledge on how and where the kids move. Can even be done by a compact camera if you know your camera well and the camera is an extension to your eye.
Back to 7D & 5D3, if you are taking a lot of indoor pictures of your kids, like I do, only :thumbsup:5D3:thumbsup: can gives a clean and colourful pictures at high ISO, sharp and non movement subject with high shutter speed without using flash. Now, I only use Single shoots as I am using convert Contax lenses to EOS. Somehow the camera will have error message if I shoot too fast. :bsmilie:
Also now I use my RX-100 compact more for my kids photo. Great for low light, high ISO and fast shutter speed.

sorry to dig this up.

if 7D is good for taking sports, does that means its good for taking toddler running around? i know its overkill but was just wondering.... TIA for any comments.

Would suggest a mirrorless since their performance is almost on par with dslr in terms of focusing. It just doesn't really makes sense to chase your toddler with a 7D or bigger dslr, just for the af speed n fps

For capturing action, I've tried both ways: high speed burst and 1/2 shot at the precise moment.
I find that the burst option does not necessary get you the "right" moment. You can get a shot before and a shot after the moment you want, but still miss it.

Whereas if you know your time and the delay from the time you press the shutter to the time it captures the image, timing it correctly can get you more of the precise moment that you want to capture. This boils down to technique rather than camera, because both cams can capture that moment.

I didn't really lose the moment due to my camera auto focusing (although at times the focus can't nail it due to poor lighting). It's not like one will be doing track focusing all the time..

Careful planning and anticipation is more effective in getting the shot.

My Want is a FF... but my need only a M43.....

But if compare 7D and 5DMKIII, will go 5DMKIII..... after you buy 7D,you srure will wan the FF... might as wwll just g straight...... but if one compare 5DMKIII and 6D... then maybe a little more difficult.... thought for me, still 5DMKIII...

There are 12 pages of results in Clubsnap for the search term 'shuttle'.:dunno:

12 pages worth of people who don't know the difference between shuttle and shutter.

7D have burst mode of 8 FPS

higher FPS does not equate to better/more accurate focusing.

but i have to say, my experience with my then-7D's AF had been very good.

one-shot AF, maybe they are quite on par when under good light, the DSLR may just edge out a little.

the big difference comes when you go into servo AF/tracking AF.

i have the OM-D E-M5, but it pales in comparison when compared to my 5DMK3.

the DSLR is VERY decisive but the m43 feels a bit hesitant, even when in one-shot AF.

i did precisely what you thought did not make sense - chasing my niece with a DSLR, a lot of time with a flash unit attached.

phase detect AF is still more responsive than contrast detect AF, at least per my experience.

here's some with both the DSLRs i have/had:

W41A0779-.jpg

5DMK3 + 70-200L

Untitled-2.jpg

7D + 17-55

of cos the E-M5 does produce good results too, when the subject is not moving erratically that is:

E-M5 + 20/f1.7

if i wanna go into servo-AF, then no doubt i will pick up the DSLR.

YMMV.
