7D or 5D Mark II?

Bendick,

YES. 5D and 5D2 have hidden center assist AF points that are activated when you use a 2.8 Lens . Aperture doesn't have to be set to F2.8.

Because the lens will stop down to the chosen aperture to record the image. Should be any lens 2.8 or faster, not just those with maximum aperture of exactly 2.8.

EOS 5D/5D MkII. The points shown in black are visible. The six supplemental points (red) are only visible in ZoomBrowser or ImageBrowser software.
The points shown in solid red are f/2.8 sensitive. The other points are f/5.6 sensitive. These extra (red) points are focus assist points that help the central focus point acquire focus.

The 5d Mark II is probably the best landscape camera out there. The detail rendition is unbelievable. Better than 7D at high ISO's. You won't need the extra focusing points of the 7D or the high FPS. 9 Focusing points and 3.9 FPS are more than enough. Just get the 5D Mark II, but you've got to sell your 10-22 and get a 17-40.

I was in this predicament. Deliberated and finally chose the 5D Mark II over the 7D. Mainly because my lens base is all full-frame and I don't intend to start an EFS lens array. Secondly I'm more inclined towards landscape and 5DM2 suits this perfectly.

i think everyone would have this dilemma, i'm no different... now i have to choose between 7D and 5Dmk2... i had been using 40D for a while, and I always wanted to go FF... think I will still choose 5Dmk2 over 7D, and i had sold off all my EF-S lenses... I'm good for a fresh startup ;)

Ah!!.. Thanks guys for the clear explanation. :) Now I understand why.

So what are you going to do with all your EF-S lenses?

with my current lens array (ALL EF-S!), I still don't know if i should go 5dmkII or 7D. I would have gotten 7D a long time ago if not for the AF issues.

I've used a rented 5dmkII + 16-35L and i must say.. the IQ is ATAS. But expensive.. and i'd have to sell off the two EF-S lenses and get a EF lens.

justifiable for a event shooter?

it's been some time now.. any new 7D owners still experiencing the AF issues?

^^Get the 7D first. I mean, the 5d2 is not worth it if you have to give up an EFS lens that you cannot afford to replace with an EF counterpart.

A 7D with 10-22+17-55 IS is still better than a 5D2 and 24-70 (or 24-105) :)

But if you don't really use your 10-22 then go ahead with the 5D2.

I have a 20D now but am looking to get a better body. The choice has been clear for me. I want the 5D2! I know the 7D is an awesome camera but as I am primarily interested in shooting landscape, I want that 21mp FF sensor! Sure I wish the 5D2 has the 1 series' AF system, as well as can shoot at least 8 frames per second. But then Canon will be selling a lot less 1 series cameras if they put those features into the 5 series.

With that in mind, I acquired only a cheap $50 EF-S kit lens for everyday shooting. Other than that, I only intend to get EF lenses even though I haven't bought the 5D2 yet. I do intend to keep the 20D rather than sell it. Not only will it serve as a backup body, having a FF body and a crop body also mean that each of my EF lenses has two focal lengths (ranges).

Thanks for the feedback.. My lenses were purchased with 'need' in mind.. both are used in all my shoots so far..

it make sense to get a 7D since my lenses are all EF-S..

Shooting Landscape and portrait? or Wedding? Choose 5D Mark II, reason: FF
Shooting sports/actions? Choose 7D or 1D, reason: high fps
Shooting people? :bsmilie:

Have budget/money? own both..

I'm currently using a 40D, and at one stage in my life, I actually researched on getting a 7D or 5D2. All my Canon lenses are L series except the Tokina 11-16mm.

I rented a 5D2 for my trip to China for a week and I took along my 24-105mm. My 40D acted as a backup camera. Although I do landscapes, not all my landscapes are at the wide end. I analyzed my pictures taken over the years and found that my median focal length is about 68mm, which I thought the 24-105mm should cover it comfortably. After I came back from my trip, I returned the 5D2 and never looked at it again. Reason? I could not honestly say that the 5D2 gave me added advantage over the 40D in terms of reach or IQ.

I probably need to qualify the last statement. With my 40D+Tokina lens, I could go as wide as 17.6mm, while the 5D2 on the 24-105mm gave me only 24mm. Of course, if I had the 16-35mm lens I could match my 40D setup, but the difference would be about the same. So I gained no advantage with the 5D2. Furthermore, since my median f.l. is about 68mm, I seldom shoot at the wide end of the zoom. If I need panoramas, I use PS on multiple shots which gives better results than trying to capture everything in one shot.

What about IQ? Well, all my pictures are either posted in the internet at largest 800x600 size, or printed on photobooks at the largest size of A4. At these sizes, I could not maximize the potential of the 5D2 and the 40D managed very well on it own. Of course, if you print canvas or posters from your pictures, then it's a different story. (Also, for some unexplained reason, I have a higher number of unsharp images from the 5D2 compared to 40D. I put that down to my unfamiliarity with the 5D2 since I only had one week's experience with it.)

What about 7D? What attracted me was the fast AF and fps. However, while the 7D could give me 8fps, the 40D could do a respectable max of 6.5fps. Furthermore, in all the time I owned the 40D, I only used the high-speed continuous mode less than 10 times. So to me it's a feature that's nice to have, but in reality I don't use it that much and therefore not critical for me. And while the fast AF in 7D is attractive, I don't do sports photography a lot (in fact, just once!) and landscapes do not move very fast. Actually, most of the time I drag the shutter using ND filters and turn off the AF during landscape shots, so AF is (again) nice to have, but not useful for my type of photography.

Your needs will be totally different, based on your shooting style. But I hope this gives you an idea of how I thought it through for myself. Currently, I'm still using my 40D, but now I must do the same exercise again for the 1D4! But that's going OT already.

Have fun!

(p.s. Having re-read my post, I realized I have not answered your question. Just simply replace "40D" with "7D" for the section on 5D2 and see if it makes any sense to you.)

I had the same issue here. Was doing alot of reading when comparing a 5dmk2to the cheaper 7D. Although my 40D is a good camera, but somehow, I was looking out for more especially in low light. As much as I desired a 5dm2, I was trying to avoid getting it due to the cost. When the 7D was out, I was so keen (and hoped that its performance is as good if not close to the 5dm2). Plus, feature-wise, it is kinda better than the 5dm2.

But in the end, I went for the 5dm2. And boy oh boy, definitely no regrets! The IQ and the color/contrast just does it. Yes, felt the pain when I lay out the cash for it. But it's soon forgotten when I look at the images. You can definitely get away without photoshop.

I guess my rationale is that, I just didn't want to go for another crop body. If 7D is better than 40D, I asked myself, how much will it be better to justify the upgrade. Will my issues with the already good 40D go away when I get the 7D? Well, 5dm2 just does it. Plus, I just didn't want to get a 7D and one year down the road, I'm yearning for a FF again.

So if I were to be asked, my answer is, if you can afford it, go full frame :) If not, of course, the 7D will be a great camera. What can I say, it's currently the best Canon crop in the market.

i had the exact same experience as you when deciding between 5Dm2 or 7D from 40D... i've no regrets with 5dm2 (only the heart pain when paying off the $50 notes in cash)...
