7D and 1Ds mk III

I'm a Nikon user, I'm seriously thinking of changing my system to MarkIII, I tired of waiting.

yo dude.. we all are.

i'm giving nikon till the end of the year to announce the d3. if they don't, i'm gonna switch over. my present nikons should be able to hold out till then (i'm looking at almost 100k shutter count for each of the 2 x D200 i own..)

at the moment, for selected jobs, i'm renting canon equipment, the 5D in particular, and L primes, mainly 35L 85L and 135L - which all have USM...

nikon doesn't only need a good d3, they also need alot of new lenses. AFS primes. and soon.

i don't see why i can't shoot just as well with canon. the 580 II is also a good (but expensive) flash and nikon is losing it's edge with it's superior flash system with this 580 II.

never been a fan of CLS and all those gimmicks for my work, so not an issue there for me.

and.. long time singing this tune liow.. THE NOISE of nikon!!! :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

1Dm3 lah.

I like the 10fps for birds in flight

Er Bro, had been hearing bad news from oversea forum for the past days regarding the MK3 AF points while taking BIF. You may like to re-search.

Of course, I will like to purchase a set if have stock despite of the issue.

Yes, many have been complaining abt AF issues when using Mk3 for BIF, check out the following thread about supposed MkIII focusing issues at Naturescapes.net (you need to register in order to view, registration is free):

Bro, had been monitoring this issue from this particular thread since yesterday. May like to hear your opinion regarding the MK3 AF on BIF. I am not a bird shooter, so knowledge minimum. :embrass: ....It seem, that the flame had spread to other forums like DPreview.

Sorry bro, no prior experience with Mk3 so far, this coming Sunday will be the first time. But have used Mk2 before for BIF, I think BIF is one of the toughest things to test the AI servo focus of the camera with, I don't wanna go into detail, but generally most Canon cams including 1 series track a moving bird against blue skies pretty well, but against stuff like water or greenery the focus will sometimes get thrown off momentarily (i.e. focus on bg). This is using central AF pt with the AF pt expansion. So far have not tried BIF using the "Ring of Fire" yet. But generally speaking, 1 series bodies do track BIF much better than their xxD or xxxD counterparts.

heard is called 5D MarkII instead of increasing the model number....

Point noted Bro. :) . I believe this conflict regarding the AF issue will continue till Canon had addressed the issue. Nevertheless, there are cases where people taking good BIF pictures with no AF issue. Cheers!

Hi AlexMoi and jOhO,

Why is there a need to switch from Nikon to Canon? :dunno:

I believe that the D200 or D2Xs can do any job well. If it is because of FF, then the question is - "is it necessary"?

For lenses, Nikon has also wide range of lenses to choose from but only that some of them are non-SWM or AFS.

dang..:flush:

Looks like I'll hav to postpone M3 purchase. :complain:

Seems like AF assist thingy...too many cooks spoil the soup...making it like the 30D (Big) AF sensor...any portion detected higher contrast, the AF jumps on it.

there are really many limits in the nikon system. ok fair enough, for the amateur bodies up to D200, nikon are very good and nice. But when we talk abt the higher range bodies from D2hs to D2xs, it is pretty clear that nikon is losing the edge.

If we talk abt fps, D2hs can only do 8fps at 4mp, while D2xs need to activate high speed crop mode to get 8fps at 6.8mp. and of course not to mention, the noise control is not that good too. ppl may argue that 4mp and 6.8mp are enough, but the fact is, for pro users of these top range dslr, they frequently print big pics, the mp is generally insufficient.

and if we talk abt lenses, their 400f2.8, 500f4, 600f4, their elite line of lenses dun have vr. ppl may argue that such big lens will almost certainly be used on tripod, but the thing is, if vr + monopod its a very good solution. much more flexible than tripod.

and for the other lenses, nikon is clearly lacking in the f4 apeture lenses. its almost either u get the consumer line of f3.5 - f5.6 zoom or a f2.8 constant apeture.

Take note: I m NOT inviting flames from nikon ppl, i myself is a current nikon user. canon is really having a major advantage in the pro series dslr arena, and nikon really needs to do something

i thot i already answered? noise levels and usm primes. no, not about full frame, i agree it's not necessary. but my choices for canon would be 5d or 1d. in this case, the full frame, while not necessary, is cheaper!

as for lenses, nikon does not carry afs primes in the "normal zoom ranges" except for the 105VR which is a micro lens that's not fast enuff (only f2.8). u might also wanna ask, is that necessary. YES, fast and silent focussing is necessary for me, indeed. it's something to do with being a stealthy photographer to capture moments without intruding. two things, sound intrudes into a moment, and, moments are fleeting, hence the need for "swift and silent".

with the apparent new d3 announcement, nikon only fixes one of "my problems". the noise in the sensor (and i'm also wondering how good it would be). the other problem would be the lens line up. unless they decide to launch several new lenses together with d3.. who knows, they have been silent for so long.. d40x? wtf??? :bsmilie:

Then in that case you better wait for the 5D replacement, it should include dust buster. And possibly 14bit RAW and highlight priority... excellent for bridal gowns details.

Don't be disappointed. People have mix feelings on the AF sensor. For me, I am all for it. :)

after going through all the posts... I'm thinking better let the dust settle down first. It might be setting issue, but juz wan to make sure.

On the other hand I'm not really selling my BIF pics, so it might not matter too much. Juz dun wan a situation where it's really a cam prob.

many of my friend who use nikon is sick of the ISO800 noise for all event and wedding photography....the client now a day they have expectation too, they also know about the nikon noise problem, my friend can't get job from a event company because he is using a Nikon....that is the only stupid reason that the event manager gave...what the hack...

He brought a Mark2N few weeks ago, I tried it....it makes me wanna go for the mark3.

this takes the cake.

I don't know about Alex and Joho, but to me, the uncropped field of view made a world of difference on how I use my lenses.

Since you ask the question on whether FF is necessary, allow me to ask you --- would you be the the first to run out and grab low priced 5Ds when the 7D/1DsMk3 come out? :bsmilie:
