not asking you to attach the monopod PERMANENTLY to the 70-200 or 80-200 la....

use it wisely. and practice on your holding techniques. if you find you cannot shoot at 200mm at 1/15 second even after months of practice, then shoot with a monopod attched. so this is quite a one-off situation, unless you are forever shooting at 200mm.. den i will recommend you another lens alltogether.

get the point???

OIC.

Are there any truth that the 80-200 tripod collar cracked after sometime? Any idea.

80-200 priced at S$2020.41
70-200 priced at S$3699.00

happened to ask in SLS and was quoted S$2850 for 70-200.. wonder how much 80-200 is cost... :cry: hope it does not burn my pocket...

ahhh okok. a dangerous place you have ventured to, if you have asked for prices at SLS. you need to know which shops to go to, and ask their prices. and make sure you dress well, and look as though you can afford to buy it, or else, even shops that are supposedly reputable here on CS, will juz ignore u when u walk in....

and of course. do your homework thoroughly, and ask for prices at every single shop possible. den get from the one you think is best. Not necessarily the cheapest shop has the best bundled stuff.

I own a Af-s version of 80-200mm f2.8. This len performance is superb. The len is shape and the AF is very fast. Too bad this len was already discontinued to give way to 70-200mm f2.8 VR.

If you have chance to have a look at this len, you will be amazed. The length of the lens is even longer than 70-200mm f2.8 VR with the lens hood on it. The lens is bout 1.6 kg by the way.

Anyway, u still can find from 2nd hand market if you are hardworking enough to look for one :)

VR really tt powerful? i am not sure but some of my friends told mi to off it..
1 even said Very Ridiculous lens;p

VR can either HELP when used correctly, or DISRUPT your shots when used incorrectly.

VR = VIBRATION REDUCTION. it DOES NOT eliminate shakes. Especially not one when I see many shooters outside now, holding cameras in a variety of ways, with their cameras vibrating like a vibrator, trying to shoot long shutter handheld.

Your friends are right, learn how to shoot with VR off first. master those basic shooting techniques. you will realise that after you have mastered them, you can shoot 1/15s handheld at 200mm sharply before your hand starts shaking. imagine what you can shoot with THAT CORRECT technique, and the VR on.

Few people can hold to 1/15s lah. And at beyond 1/15s VR is useless.
VR at 1/15s is useful for one thing only - panning. (for those who can shoot at 1/15s)

i have a sucess rate of about 70% when i shoot at 200mm 1/15s, VR off, static, not panning. its a matter of holding and breathing technique. i never turned VR on to try if i can go longer, cos i dun like VR. i dunno how to use it properly. i still haven gotten around to learning how to use it effectively.

i have also seen people handholding 1/2s at 200mm, and produces amazing pictures. if i ever chance upon those threads again, i will show it to you...

Was the thread started by me? ;p
Anyway I do recall one thread. The lens used was a 80-200mm.

Why don't like VR? "Don't know how to use it properly" - don't understand your meaning. There no special technique when using VR what. It just supplements your current technique.

For me, while I can handhold for quite long periods without worry, if I have VR on my 80-200mm I would be one happy guy. VR is EXTREMELY useful for panning. Any no technique will allow you to pan nicely without a tripod at a speed lower than 1/60s.
(I used to have a 55-200mm VR and 18-200mm VR. The pans these lenses allowed me to produce made me quite happy)

Also, VR allows you to shoot in some situations where even a faster shutter speed may not help. I.e. moving vehicle. Your tripod/monopod/technique is not going to help much here. I have personally experienced this on a boat rocking around in the middle of the sea.

:D Excellent response.

Go for VR if you always shoot in low light. Otherwise save the $$ for something else :)

because when i engage VR, i will focus on the entire view through the viewfinder, and observe if the viewfinder is moving. and i will focus on it too much, and wait too long, then i snap. and then, my hands wil be losing stability already. and more importantly, VR, is good for stationary, low light targets and so on. I do more sports. VR helps NOTHING at all. I will love to see one use VR to track a rugby player zig zagging though a bunch of players. you try to move it around, the VR will try to "hold it back", and you have a problem. and that, i believe, is also a good formula to get your VR spoilt more quickly.

and in most applications, when are you able to shoot at 200mm, and need 1/15s exposure? most of the time in low light like stages and events and stuff, to freeze motion you need much more then that. so, VR or not, doesnt make a difference to me. at least to me.

only time i use VR, is to shoot the moon handheld. ok, i do NOT dispute, that helps. :bsmilie:

If you're shooting events indoors, you're likely not get many keepers even if you can shoot at 1/15 because you will get a lot of motion blurs in your shots. Need 1/60 or faster to stop motion for people.

Thus, VR will only be more useful if you shoot at the tele end. With the better low noise of the current cameras, esp D700 , D3 etc, pushing ISO to stop motion is better than getting a lot of motion blur shots.

Money no problem -> 70-200
Some budget limitation -> 80-200
Lens lust -> 70-200

However, I suspect that after getting the 80-200, some time later, you will wonder if you should have saved up more for the 70-200. The reverse is not likely to happen. :)

Both are good lens, I'm sure you'll be happy with either :thumbsup:

hmmm if the tele-lens were meant for multi-purpose?
for outdoor and indoor... which would be more appropriate... however, i noticed that if wanna get a convertor... it seems having the VR version woould be better choice...:sweat:
