Can the few seniors here please give us some valuable tips on how to shoot sharp pics, non VR on 1/15secs+/-?

Then, save $ on the long run :bsmilie:

Kind of like shooting long range on our rifles :)

I've also been pondering on these lenses for a long time but held back on getting one as I find very little usage on it for me. I have a Sigma version which I've only used 4x in 6 months. I even went on to get those with variable f stops that are much lighter, smaller & sharpness @ F8+ since I do more day shoots @ high shutters.

think about how you shoot 300m with M16 last time when u wear green. how you position your arms (should they be close to your body or spread wide like chiken wings), your breathing technique (deep breathe and hold, half breathe and hold, or breathe normally and shoot), your standing posture (legs spread wide apart, legs stuck to each other, or legs should width apart). its not much of a difference to shooting long range with a camera. you are basically minimising handshake, which can translate to a LOT when you are shooting at 200mm. cos a slight movement can mean a lot at 200mm, and negligible at 12mm.

if you wanna knw more, i doubt there is anyone else who can help you. its all about practicing.

and please, be practical with your expectations. dun expect to shoot 1 second handheld at 200mm even after 1-2 months of practicing. it takes a very long time to achieve that. if you can shoot at 1/15 after 2 months of practice, its already a good start.

Would be best if the person was a sniper. ;p

monopod.. bipod.. tripod.. whatever pod.. even if cemented pillar. if you cannot even hold the camera properly with the correct techniques, the damn thing still shakes.

learn the correct techiques. and maybe you can have something to share or boast to other shooters next time, that you have handheld 1/15 shots at 200mm before, with PERFECT sharp images.

Eh.. the point is not to boast lah. Who goes round boasting ;p

to some, when you tell them you have the capability to do a certain thing and the other party cant, they can get jealous, and treat it as boasting, or they can listen to how you do it, and learn from it.

hence, its either sharing or boasting.

its simply human nature.

but this forum is not about human nature. is about cameras. so here we go.

"shoot more, talk less".

need to c what camera that you are using....
if you using the DX camera D90 and below...
you need to choose 70-200 F2.8

else you can use the 80-200 F2.8

because 80-200 F2.8 have the slow focus speed than 70-200 F2.8

80-200 priced at S$2020.41
70-200 priced at S$3699.00

happened to ask in SLS and was quoted S$2850 for 70-200.. wonder how much 80-200 is cost... hope it does not burn my pocket...

i think better ask the price at JB..
KL price for 80-200 was RM4k
and 70-200 was RM6k

If you can wait, wait for another couple of months. Yen is dropping..:)

Is it? Wait for a few months will be cheaper?
Isn't the market recovering ?
So wouldn't cost increase or the very least remain the same?

dear fellow CSers, experts, brothers, sisters, advisors,

please advise the difference between these 2 lens and why the huge price difference for the 10mm differences ;)
interested to get one for tele but was puzzled about the price differences and performance between the 2 lens if its only 10mm difference

thanks

Hi

Both are very good telephoto zoom lens. You won't be disappointed by either lens. But there are differences in the lens which are on the brink of being spammed in this forum. Hahaha! Just kidding.

Do you have lots of spare cash for a 70-200mm VR? If yes, are you willing to pay this kind of money of the lens? If you have the ability and is willing to spend, then by all means go for it.

I had the same questions as you some time ago when I was shopping for a telephoto zoom. I was considering between 70-200 VR that cost $2.6k and 80-200 that cost $1.6k that time. I had the means to buy the 70-200 VR but the huge price tag held me back for a long time.

After speaking to many photography enthusiasts and friends as well as assessing carefully my needs, I bought the 80-200. I realized that the 70-200 VR is an overkill for my hobby. I am not a pro and I don't need the VR function for the things I like to to shoot. However I wanted something decent and I am relieved I made a sensible choice i.e. 80-200mm. I am happy using the lens and personally I say it is the most bang for buck telephoto zoom. I am still learning to use the lens to its fullest potential as so for my other lens.

In summary, assess your needs carefully. Hope you don't rush to get something just because people say it is good or because everyone else is getting it.

Maybe one day when I have lots of spare cash and nothing to do, I may get a 2nd hand 70-200 VR to play play. Hahaha.

it is not only 10mm, the material are many different, ED glass, 5 vs 3 is the key

Seriously, based on the previous posts, IMO the lens performance is over-rated here. How abt harnessing the performance of your cam body's features to enhance the lens performance? Like utilizing the auto-ISO compensation, etc... Should be able to pick up a tip or two from here

Fast lens dun come cheap, that's for sure. If you're really tight on budget, get a Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED ;)
