DPReview posted comparison between the 3 Giants :)

Very enlightening and eye opening... The interface is very nice allowing you to choose the ISO you want to compare and the area of the studio test picture.

K5 is looking great! ! ! No surprise :D

I dont trust the test. As you can see, at 12800 comparing all of the 3, the Canon produces the least noise. The d7000 and the k-5 should have been on par,if not better. How can it show significantly less noise??

I posting this last week.

At first, it lead me to the conclusion that all 3 were roughly on par.
But on closer scrutiny, the DPR results just cannot be taken seriously.

Here are some of my own results.

Firstly, I wanted to verify if the accusation that shooting at f9 as opposed to f5.6 was a pooer choice when using a FA50/1.4, so I did some shots myself at ISO12800 (JPEG).

Certainly not defending DPR (which I don't trust at all), but I really want too see how bad the selection of f-stop can be.

Camera was mounted on a tripod.
Lens is a A50/1.4 with hood on. (Sorry don't have a FA50/1.4)
Focusing was MF using LV at x8 mag.
NR OFF

I can't fault the use of f9, though I do find fault with the sharpness reported on DPR.
Of course the results can be affected by may things like a lack of hood and poor focus, so we will never be sure.
Repeat : I certainly think I see better than what DPR has put up.

After establishing that f9 would not be a bad setting to duplicate the DPR shot, I did the test shots using ISO12800 with NR ON and OFF

Comparing the shots at f9 alone with NR OFF and NR on Auto (which would be at Medium setting).

f9 ISO12800 NR OFF

f9 ISO12800 NR Auto (ie. Medium)

f9 ISO12800 NR Auto (ie. Medium)

IMO, NR off is better than NR Auto.

How I wish I did not throw away that empty bottle of Bailey's and Martini .....

Its quite obvious DPR did not bother with verifying the focusing on the K5 shots. Oddly, they chose f9 instead of f8 as used for the 60D.
K5 users will know what o/p they are getting with their camera.
But DPR gets the :thumbsd: from me.

Went to Chinatown over the weekend, and visited a shop I frequent. richly decorated with warm lighting. I did a shot at ISO12800 (sorry for the poor exposure though).

Certainly not what DPR is showing up.

if you move around the preset view, you can see, different position, hv slightly different in noise level.
Maybe some camera more sensitive to certain color.
But generally seem Canon 60D performance quite well too.
But I still like my K5 :bsmilie:

If you compare raw, seem K5 still better (my own preference).
Try to set the preview position to the watch at right bottom corner.

Yes exactly... Watch is the place to check :)

I think K5 is on-par with the rest, and see what 60D review says about usability HIGH ISO, I am sure K5 review is going to rock, but the results speak for themselves, and we have seen enough great HIGH ISO samples and insane low ISO ones ;)

Review is just for "mental satisfaction" only lol!

Cheers to Pentax!

IMO they are more or less lens testing instead of camera testing. They really should use a modern Pentax lens, like DA35/2.8 macro or something. The FA50/1.4 DPR has been using obviously has some optical problem.

Apparently DP Review have replaced their K-5 test images with new ones... for the better.
The whole episode unfortunately has undermined what little credibility they used to have.
