5DmkII slow AF ?

From my experience the 5D's AF is significantly slower compared to 40D's.

I read from the net that 5D's AF module is the same as 20D's so that might explain. Could be wrong info though as the net has tons of rumours etc.

The AF for 5d2 is pretty slow in dim lightings, and i usually rely on that one good centre AF to catch focus. Faster lenses like the 135f2 work a little better for me. For slower lenses like the 85L, a bit of manual focusing gets the shot done much faster.

To TS, may be the fact that the 5DmkII AF is EXACTLY THE SAME as the classic 5D's will put your mind at ease?

I'm not a huge fan of the 5D's AF, but, I've learnt to suck it up and live with it. One of the primary reasons I'm not upgrading to the 5D2 yet.

you're very lucky. all 5D2's AF are slow except yours.

I sense some sacarsm there... :)

In case my post was not clear, I am comparing it with 20D/30D which I had before my upgrade. My question is 40D AF is much faster then 30D? I thought there were the same as 20D/30D ?

the 40D AF is much faster at the peripheral points than the 20D. not sure abt 30D tho

i've no issue with 5D and 5D mark II autofocus, i dont really expect mountains, hills or oceans are running around in the viewfinder ;p.

It all boils down to application & expectation. Compare to Leica R5, my 5D2 AF is lightning fast, since the DIGIC4 is probably a million time faster then my slow brain & hands.

rather than getting the 40D or 50D, i suggest getting the old and proven 1D MK II if AF is your concern.

Once you have used to the 45 AF points in 1-series, you will not want to use any 5D or XXD :bsmilie:

The 5D and the 5DII have always been a bit lame when it came to focusing...
This is why I always say nothing beats a 1 series body.
In situations where the 5DII cannot focus, you have to focus manually, or use the center focusing point as thats the most sensitive.

Oh, put a speedlight on your camera and it should help with focus, or ST-E2 if you have one.

Good luck,

well, the 1D are significantly more ex than the xxD series. not justifiable unless AF is the ultimate concern.

Thats why 7D is very useful, i happy with 7D AF feature. :)

Used 1D MKII are going at around 1700 now. Same price as brand new 50D body.

are u comparing apple to apple ? how can compare used against brand new ?? used 50D only 1.1K lah:dunno:

I believe your 5D2 is flawed if the AF is much slower the 40D. Slower then 7D, 1D is understandable. I suggest you test more to confirm it's not an user issues, and then send to CSC for them to trouble shoot for you. My 5D2 AF works very well, no noticable difference from 20D/30D, which I believe is the similar AF module as 40D.

The AF module is different.

1DII is a different beast compared to 50D.. Sure the MP is lesser, heavier and 'older' technology, but it is really in a league of its own compared to the XXD series.

I miss my 40D.....

Hey, Canto, don't like that lah...
Your 5DMkII has been serving you well...
The AF not that bad lah... :bsmilie:
