Therein lies my dilemma, been using a 350D for nearly 4 years.
Thinking of either the 40D + 17-55mm or 5D + 17-40mm for a giant leap.
Occasionally shoot dance photography, the ISO capability of the 5D is a real life saver.
Wah, these are the key words, if budget allows. :bsmilie:Then go for 5D. If budget allows, go for the MK II.:thumbsup:

Think I'll stick to shopping around for a 2nd hand 5D and 17-40mm.
That u'll have to use adaptor but whether will it match the 5D i wouldn't know. I've still yet to try out the ZE Planar *T 50 f/1.4 to see how it matches my EF 50 f/1.2L.
Hi Snoweagle,
Based on what I have read, quite extensively, and my limitted experience with many brands of prime lenses, including Canon, I have no doubt that your 50 f1.2L is already one of the best. The other famous one is the Minolta Rokker 58 f1.2 and possibly the Leica Sumilux f1.4. We are blessed with our Canon bodies that can be easily adapted to try out these wonderful lenses. My 40D has already been stretched to the limit by some of my Zeiss and Leicas and that's why I am thinking of a 5D.

Hi Snoweagle,No doubt the 50 f/1.2L is among the best, i still wish to try out the Zeiss 50 f/1.4 to make a comparison, see if optic quality is better than my L.
Hi Snoweagle,
IMHO you don't need another 50mm. However, if you wish to try Zeiss lenses, I will urge you to try the ZE Planar 85 f1.4 instead or even the shorter ZE Distagon 21 f2.8 when it becomes available any time soon. The other experience you should venture into is to try out a Leica on your 5D, something like the Sumicron 35 f2 or the Sumilux 35 f1.4 or maybe try out my Leica Elmarit 28 f2.8. Let me know if you are keen as I sure would like to see how my range of manual lenses perform on your 5D.

I sold off almost my entire Nikon setup and made the jump to Canon by getting the 5D. Old tech but it is FF and still produces magnificent picture, even when compared to latest models such as D300. I was lucky enough to have bought one in excellent condition from a lady user and it was only bought in August last year! Very pleased with the result with my current setup and I don't have to spend a bomb to get FF. 5D is definitely worth the money if you don't need the HD video and other features in the Mk II.
Amen to that....
I take back my statement about not printing larger than A3 size. :embrass: Yes, agree, you can blow up prints greater than A3 size with no problems especially if you shoot RAW and with good post processing. Actually for A3 size even a file from a good 6MP sensor can have loads of details too. So larger than A3 is definitely no problem for the 12MP 5D Mk I.
Probably I should have worded it this way: Resolution wise 12 MP is usually more than enough for anybody, unless you are regularly doing very large commercial prints, thats where the 21MP of 5DII excels.
actually does the difference from 1.3x and FF is alot?
if not what makes the 1D series and 5D so much price difference.
btw may I ask, are they still selling spare batteries for 5D ?
Hi Anthony, yes, the 50mm f1.2 is a lovely lens, the manual focusing feel is great and the tones, colours and bokeh produced wide open is rather pleasing imo. Hmm, no issues with mirror hitting the lens, or else, i'd have started a thread on a "Broken mirror 5D due to MF lenses" threadSomehow i feel that these MF lenses perform better on a FF sensor.

wow, you've got both the elmarit-r and distagon 28/2.8s!
which is better wide open?
Anyway guys, i tried both the Zeiss ZE Planar *T 50 and 85 f/1.4. Quite impressed with the performance and manual focusing feels more refined and lenses are also solidly built. Price also reasonable but somehow comparing the 50mm one to my 50 f/1.2L, pic output is quite similar.
12mm on FF too much vignetting? no?![]()
MF lenses will take a while to get used to. You also need better focusing screen and possibly a magnified eye piece. But once you get comfortable with them, I find them more satisfying to shoot. Last Saturday, I shot my niece's wedding with 3 MF lenses, my CZ 50 f1.7 and 28 f2.8 in the day and the emarit 28 f2.8 in the night. I got 250 good shots out of 300, not bad for an amature with MF lenses.
IMO....If u not used to MF...just keep your 50/1.2L lar.I still need to get some use to MF lenses. Right now i still can't justify if i should or should not replace my 50 f/1.2L with the ZE 50 f/1.4 or even the ZE 85 f/1.4.
