You are right! I dun need it. I dun shoot very very wide and then crop the portion I want. So no fear of seeing the black dots. So my 30D shd be enuff liao but unfortunately, sold away and got the 40D. Lagi more enuff than my 30D

For the pixel peepers out there, seems that there's a simple solution. Turn OFF highlight tone priority (lighting optimizer and noise reduction too, but I believe the latter two only affect jpeg). It's been shown to work. Hopefully, the fix is as simple as that. Looks like it's a silly in-camera thing... much ado about nothing then.

If you look at his later tests where he posted 6 close-up photos (including the 5D), you can see that the black dots are lighter but they are still there whereas the photo taken using the 5D does not exhibit any black dots as well. In any case, buying an expensive camera and having to handicap it by switching off certain options that may be useful to some people is hardly a solution.

I say it's best to wait until Canon comes out with a statement or if Canon decides to quietly fix the problem, until we know for sure that the issue has been fixed.

It's also not just the black dots - which may not appear or be apparent in all shots; it's more the worry that if the QA can let this pass through their tests, what else could be wrong!

My personal opinion, under real world print conditions, do any of us really look at images so closely?

I think it depends on what you are shooting and the size you intend to print. You certainly don't want your Xmas shots to look like this!

Guys you keep discussing the photo that would end-up in the trash anyway. The photo sucks black spots or no black spots. I was yet to see a keeper photo that was ruined by the black dots problem. So far I've not seen such photo. For personally, I don't carry about this problem and going to buy 5D2 regardless.

That's a badly taken shot to begin with. I mean if you are going to do night shoots, at least bring a tripod la. At ISO 1600, don't expect wonders from it.

if I am travelling, I don't expect to bring a tripod along when I am out at night.

I seen the same phenomenon from many others pict posted online way before we even heard about 5D or 5D II. It seems to me that some kind of CA, especially if the shade happen on one side of the bright spot.

But since that the favourite pass time of people now a days seems to be 'eagerly anticipate new product...', follow by 'spreading rumours on spec of new products...', 'trash the spec of new products once official spec is out...', follow by 'eagerly speculate price of new products...', and then 'trash the manufacturer for the price & release date of new products....', and once new product is shipping, 'pick and slam on any possible fault on new products...', the cycle just repeat itself over and over, I will just let the masses has their fun. Let's trash 5D II, let's all defect to Nikon camp, and do the same thing with Nikon cameras, then defect back to Canon camp again... That should bring us out of the recession when we are done.

If you are referring to the photo I posted above, my apologies for not clarifying that it was a 100% crop so you shouldn't judge the photo from that section alone.

You are different from me - I would never buy a camera knowing that there QC issues that have not yet been resolved. It's like buying a car with small scratches all over. Would you accept it if the dealer says..."Don't worry - you can't see the scratches unless you look real close"!

Btw, cnet asked Canon about the problem and here was Canon's response:

"We have been made aware of this and are looking into it," spokesman Len Musmeci said Monday.

Now that Canon is looking into the issue, it's only a matter of time before they come out with a statement.

Guess it's a 'commonsense' human mentality (not sure of animals though) to want to get what you deserved for what you'd paid.

Since 5D2 is so ex, and got this black dots problem, just jump ship lor. Solve everything else. Discuss and keep using DPR's complaints won't produce any pictures.

For me, I'd just shot a wedding with my new 5D2 and loving every single bit of the camera.

If you're serious about your photographs you would. No camera is a magic bullet for a "no-tripod", especially more so at night.

Plus, if one can afford a camera like this, I'm sure a carbon fibre or aluminium tripod tt is pretty light is no problem. Convenience is not so much of an issue when you care about your photography.

I love this statement....seen these cycles through the years since I had been holding a camera or other products. It will happen in the past and then. It will continue to happen in the future.:bsmilie:

You are right.

So, let me reiterate:

This black dot issue is certainly not new and has been there since the good old 1D2N days: see here. And Canon Japan did not know what to do with the issue then. Doubt they'll know what to do now.

There are 2 options for buyers: (i) harp on the issue as if staring at photos of bright lights is all you do (ii) refrain from getting Canon (especially after their long recent history of fiasco) and stop bit**ing about it.

Of course, some of you may enjoy bit**ing non-stop.

That was why we kept delaying the launch.. not that we wanted to make you folks anxious.. we hope that the problem will be solved in our next product release in about 1 year time.. our new improved 5D mk III with lots and lots of new features for you folks.. such as touch screen, movement detection (on top of face detection), and of course.. we will still keep the fancy "print" button..
