Our PC show is a big joke. I've bought several stuffs in the past and either they are the same price outside (if you getting the higher end brand/models), or else, they give useless stuffs. Never been to any such shows for the past 1-2 years anymore. Even for the lower end models, I really don't see how much cheaper they can get compared to outside prices. It's just playing with consumer psychology.

One thing that irks me is the Canon bag, and frigging cheapo table-top tripods. I don't know how many I have already, and I had to sound it out to Canon Singapore: Look, can you guys please stop giving out such stuffs? How much do they cost to make, and after I got 1 Canon DSLR, 1 compact, and 1 video cam, I had 3 bags I didn't want!

But it seemed they are not going to change anything about it. The Marketing Dept seems to have a good time with the ploy, and singaporeans being singaporeans, they seem to feel good when they receive something, nevermind whether they will use it or not.

So at the PC show, you got to squeeze like crazy and feel good cos you got some generic cheap freebies. Can't understand that.

I did notice in bargaincity 1-2 months ago that they had "580exII" at $599 for purchase-with-purchase on 5dmk2. I checked with them if it was from Canon or their shop, and their replied that it was their own shop promo, not from Canon.

It must be due to my email to them. I emailed them to enquire if 5DmkII purchase is entittled to 580exII at $599. They replied a few days later that they will extend this deal for 5DmkII but only limited stock and I saw that they updated their website site accordingly.

But I didn't purchase from them :p

Why we purchase 5D Mark II body doest come along with compact flash??

Dont know will fortcoming PC Show 2009 give it as free gift?

Canon do not have promo for their higher end models.

Anyway would you rather pay the retail price at PC show to get free CF card or some lens cleaning kit, bag & tripod & squeeze with the crowd or purchase from other shops like TK, MS, Cathay at a few hundred dollars cheaper and use the savings to buy your own CF card

That is exactly what I was talking about in #20. I can understand for the newbies that know nothing about camera and have not visited Clubsnap. But, if they have visited Clubsnap, I would hope that they at least realized that RRP is much much higher than what CP, MS, AP, TK, JO has been selling. And PC Show and the like are selling the products at RRP.

And if they know these facts and still go squeeze themselves silly, then perhaps it is a fetish to them or something that I don't understand. Definitely not because of trying to save money.

I did like to know all your views, that should i get the 5dmII with the 24-105L lens or not.

The price of the lens is it worth to buy it?

Can comment.

Any price reduction for the above mentioned on the near future?

Hmmm it not necessary true. For the last show in March, they were giving a camera and a printer with any purchase of an FS11 camcorder at the show. This deal was way better then what any shop is offering. Yes you may not need those stuff but is the Singaporean mindset. The more the merrier. I ever did consumers sales before and the auntie was saying the next door is giving an umbrella and why you never give. If you were the marketing manager what suggestions do you have on the promotion?

Cash Rebates just like what Canon USA is doing right now.

That would be nice. But not without problems either, you hear some of the horror stories about dealing with the third party company Canon hires to manage its rebates...like negotiating ninja-warrior obstacle course

Canon USA have learned their lesson. This time around, the rebate is an instant rebate that deduct off the amount from your bill. No more filling out of forms and wait 6 weeks for the cheque to come back.

Lemme try this one  I think it may be because pictures taken with on-board flashes are generally awful, and the targeted clientele for the 5D2 are people who can be bothered to slap on a swivel head external flash in their pursuit of a good exposure?

Sorry with the OT.. it's not a big issue for me (esp. since I already have an external flash), but lots of people are upset about it because the Other Brand has it. Built-in is actually very good in certain situations - like as a fill flash in outdoors sunny condition.

Anyway, back on topic, Canon does not provide CF with their non-pro xxD cameras either. And I don't think they provide SD with the Rebels. Or do they bundle it in Singapore? Over in the US they come without memory.

Instead, now we have vendors jacking up the price just before an instant rebate, and lowering it when it expired. So, instead of $100 off an expensive lens, it is more like $40. Better than nothing, I suppose...

Depends on which lens you bought. I heard that the 70-200 2.8 IS rebate is completely 'taken away' by the price hike right after the rebate announcement. I heard people are pretty upset about Canon but some has taken it out on B&H and Adorama instead thinking it is the dealer pocketing the rebate.

Hmm good idea for promotion :) Hope canon is reading this. The heard that the 3rd party company filed for bankruptcy last year.

Hmm, I believe that's one of a kind promotion? Doesn't apply generally. What was the cam and printer model by the way? If it's some low end ones which I suspect, seriously, I'd still have the headache of thinking what I'm going to do with them.

To me, real promotions are when you offer hard to resist monetary discounts. Something you can never get in the shops on ordinary days.

I understand the market here is small to compare us to the overseas market. So giving substantial monetary discounts may be a bit difficult?

Then why not offer a point system for loyal Canon customers? They used to have it a few years ago. Or how about offering customers 2-3x the points at PC shows when they buy stuffs there? The points can then be used to exchange say, SD/CF cards, printer papers, batteries, etc.

I think those are the real deal. Giving out cheapo looking cam bags, plasticky tripods and unbranded lens cleaner (Who uses this often?!) are distractions on kiasu singaporeans or the poor greenhorn photographers who think they are getting good deals.

Come to think of it, the same cheapo freebies apply to other promotions. I don't know how many umbrellas, pens, "obiang" looking bags (with the company's logos printed on it) I have received from signing up credit cards, tour packages, etc. If they can't give monetary discounts, seriously, I wish to tell them, save the trees or your own money producing these stuffs. Donate them to charity perhaps and tell your customers you are doing so? I'm sure they will appreciate the effort.

Corporate marketing + social responsibility. Let's keep dreaming

i doubt there's any promo for 5D2 at the show... the usual target audience are the consumer and prosumer models.

even then, i don't remember canon's promo to be anything special as compared to the other popular dealers.

i do remember sony to really give a lot freebies. that's their marketing ploy to capture the starter photogs. i remember earlier this year, sony dslr give like 4 SD cards, case, tripod, dry box, screen protector, cleaning kit, printer and perhaps another batt. not sure on the batt but the rest of the stuff im pretty sure.

canon at most give u one more SD card. its all about market positioning. canon is on top...

somemore 5D2 win top body award this year, what for give freebies to induce people to buy. you buy it cos its good, not cos of the freebies.

True, Canon give nothing extra to 5D2 owners. Oh, wait, no, perhaps not true, they give much aggravation to us 5D2 owners by having shortage in stock of the LE-6 batteries and focusing screens. Two months after I put down my name in the list for an EG-D in Canon Vivo City, they still don't know when the stock will arrive.

For the FS11 they were giving a A1000IS and for the printer was a CP760. On top of that they were giving an additional battery and etc. Can't remember. Is bought by my gf friend. :)

Think you need to call them up, I already got mine in May. Yes, I did reserve but I had to call to check.

Never bought anything from IT show before and never will... It's just not condusive and the freebies are nothing to shout about. Free LCD protector, free tripod, free camera bags, free pen, free caps, free camera cleaning kit, free 2GB memory card, free 2GB thumb drive, etc... How much does all these adds up to?? Not even a hundred I think... But the price of the camera they're selling is close to the retail price which is way higher than what OP, JO, MS, TK, etc are selling.

But then again... we still need people to buy from IT shows to boost our economy... :)
