doesnt really need the 5D, if you have something like a Pentax K10D should be enough.

You've just pointed out the beauty of subtle marketing. Of course there may be a chance that the team happened to have some EF equipment lying around to use. But more often than not, especially in such a high profile stunt, it was there cuz Canon offered their gears for them to use.
