Launch date of the 5D replacement on 26 August 2008?

Here's what the threadstarter claims the site says (its in Swedish btw):

Again, take this with a big pinch of salt. :sweatsm:

It says in the original context, an invitation to a Canon press presentation, for some sort of product launch, there were no specifics about the products being put up for the event. The 5D mkII launch was a speculation by another thread member on that board...

i've found that i like the wideness of the 16mm end on my 16-35 but 35 isn't long enough.

my 24-70 would be PERFECT on FF for the stuff i shoot.

maybe in a year once this replacement is out and prices have come off its early adopter peak i'll pick one up =S

The 16-35 (like the 17-40) on FF and the 10-22 on 1.6X are meant to be ultrawide zooms so u can't compare it to a 24-70.

Hmm...26 August. Mark that on my calender.
But maybe another fool's day dream again after so many false release dates. Hahha!

ok, as posted on the other (now deleted) thread, prepare for the imminent launch of the 5DII.

Reason?

I bought a 5D secondhand yesterday.

yes, but a 16-35mm on a crop is 25.6-56mm. what i meant to say was that a FF with 24-70 would be just perfect for me with the combination of 24 at the wide end and 70 at the long end as i really like the 16mm (25.6mm) length on my 30D.

Yeah, by same logic I'm also expecting an updated 100-400L :bsmilie:

Congratulations on the camera.

Not 1st April 2009 yet, so our hopes are not so foolish, I hope.

I am grateful to you and Snoweagle and others ... it surely will bring Canon one step closer to the release.

Not based on rumors, but just my personal observation.

It seems Canon is incensed so strongly on clearing/proving its 1D/1Ds AF performance issue, and rightly so considering these are its crown jewels (left and right balls). So not a chance in hell will they let any semi-pro or pro-like model release shift away the pro customer focus from the crown jewels.

This basically rules out ANY announcement of new exciting models during the Olympics or even immediately after. I'm not expecting any news from Canon any earlier than Photokina.

Based on the little info that's trickling here and there, seems that Canon is likely to be releasing 2 FF cameras below the 1Ds line ?? :dunno:

I mean, a 12mp FF camera with the bells and whistles of the 40D and under US$1900 MSRP must fall under the category of an 'entry level' FF wouldn't it ? A 7D ??

And followed up with a true 5D replacement either in tandem or shortly after that inherits much of what the 1Ds MkII is minus the built-in battery grip ? 16mp, 45pt AF, weather sealing, perhaps ISO 100-12,800 extendable to ISO 50 - 25,600 ? OLED display, Pro-level weather sealing, DIGIC IV processor, Dual card slots, 5-8 FPS, 20 frame RAW buffer, card limited JPG, dual EF-EFS compatibility ( but the mirror will be a big problem that I do not see being possible to resolve though..) ?

very much a mirror of the Nikon D700 albeit with higher specs and probably more expensive, like about US$3500~3750 ? A 5D MkII or a 3D ??

The first model is something I am looking for and seems reasonably feasible.

But the second model will sure kill two pro models - 1Ds and 1DMkIII. Unless they beef up the specs of these two lines, I will be surprised if this will happen soon.

There is this Art of Crippling ... which they are so good at.

Wow, right along with Sun Tzu's Art of War, we are going to have Canon's The Art of Crippling Promising Products.

They just need to ensure that nothing can challenge the 1Ds and 1D cams. Hopefully whatever that dribbles down would be sufficient to keep us happy but still hungry for more.

don't think they can afford to release around equal specs and charge more.

will consumers pay more for something that is better than the D700? That remains to be seen really...

We never know... maybe Canon will release a 1DMk3N ? 12-14Mp, 55pt AF ? 12Fps, ? OLED screen, ISO 100-12,800 ? 3000 shot battery, 2.4ghz remote shutter control, build in GPS, Wifi ? :dunno::bsmilie::bigeyes:

So the "3D" will look like what the 40D was to the 1DMk3 wouldn't it ?

Well, the first one is almost a certainty from an economic standpoint, its just when Canon would choose to introduce it like when they released the original 300D at under US$1000. ( back when US$ was about SG$1.7~1.8)

A sub US$2000 FF camera is definitely within the grasp of Canon since they have all the development costs of such a camera fully defrayed by their 5D and 450D / 40D. They just need to repackage the stuff together... And perhaps tweak the 5D sensor in the same way as they have worked on the 450D sensor. So a 'resurrected 5D' sensor with perhaps ISO 100-6400 native and ISO 12,800 extended. Wouldn't cost them more than 6,000 sets to make back the development costs I presume ?? :dunno:

if they're only getting their act together now, it's too late? they're only reacting to the Nikon moves rather than making their own stunning progress...

Not so long ago, Nikon was so far behind. Canon came out with first affordable DSLR. First CMOS sensor. First low noise sensor with high ISO. Only FF camera for a long time. First 10 fps DSLR. First DSLR with print button. OK, scratch the last one. Anyway, for a while, it looks like Nikon cannot compete. The pendulum has swung the other way, let's see when it will swing back.

It will take Canon's bravery to excel and surpass their own 1Ds and 1D Mkiii to compete with Nikon's beefed up AF and ISO range at least.
Dun think they will do that at all, another disappointment to forsee for consumers.

I'm really a fan of low natural light photography tho. Hiaz...
