5D classic vs D90

TS... since you are using the Nikon, I am assuming that you are familiar with the Nikon already. Why don't you consider a D700. After the release of the D800, I am expecting to see D700 thrown out in the BnS section and will be quite affordable.

The D700 would have a better focusing system as compared to the 5D classic (or even the 5D mkII), it is also a FF with BIM so all your lenses should be able to work, no problem at all (unless those lenses are designed to be purely manual), one setback is that D700 can't take movie (but I believe 5D classic can't take movie too - not too sure).

If taking movie is a must for you, then I would recommend the D7000, which is a beautiful camera too, with good weather sealing, great high ISO noise handling, excellent pic quality, large buffer and high speed, also take excellent movies (full HD I believe).

yup why not a D7000? it's around 12xx - 13xx? you got a budget of $1500) i'm sure you can get 1 from bNs section?

and D7000 comes with Bim too.. ISO wise can use up to 1600 (3200 for me, as im not fussy haha)

and you dont have to sell all your stuff and jump over to other camp.

basically you can just sell your body and upgrade to D7000.

unless you want FF that's different case..

For $1.2k I rather go for a D7k instead of 5D. Reason being:

D7k has pretty good high ISO performance, comparable to 5D
D7k is weather-sealed, 5D is not. Of course your lens must be equally sealed
D7k has better AF tracking
5D has no auto sensor cleaning (I hate dirty sensor)
You don't have to reinvest in EF lenses

The only thing 5D excels is the better DoF control, given that if you are prepared to fork out $$$ on large aperture lens.

if you are not fussy, you can go up to 6400 iso with usable picture for d7k

I'm a Nikon user and I've seen very nice images from the Canon's 50mm f1.8 and especially the 85mm f1.8. A don't think it is necessary to get expensive glass, normal ones can do for me :)

+1 to this.
The DOF for the same FOV on FF can make even some of these cheap f1.8, f2, f2.8 lenses produce very nice shallow DOF effects.
Something that would have needed faster more expensive lenses on APS-C.

Of course with expensive lenses, they generally are faster, better sharpness characteristics and rendering.
For me, I'd do with the cheaper lenses. :D

I am willing to bear with the costs and the added weight of a FF setup. Its a semi need semi want i suppose. Ive been shooting with many AFD lenses with my D3100 and even though the MA is manageable its starting to get on my nerves. I desperately need a BIM camera to fully utilize AFD or EF which is the cannon equivalent. I've been shooting at a couple social gatherings and the inability to exceed 800 ISO without excessive noise is just frustrating.

Also, about the 5D1. Ive read that it wont AF anywhere outside the circle in the middle. True?

hello ts, i suppose your reason for wanting to switch to either 5d1/d90 because of excessive noise when shooting at >iso 800 is not a valid reason.

you are taking a step back when youre switching to these 2 cameras in terms of high ISO noise performance, do you realise??? control wise, d90 and 5d1 is a step up from d3100 and offers greater control over how you want to shoot.

i understand your need to get a built in motor camera for nikon, otherwise you're stuck with af-s lenses for your d3100. for FF you can consider d700, DX you can look at D7000 if high iso performance is really that crucial to you. if you're just planning to dump ur photos on fb, then no point scrutinizing the high iso noise performance, when the pic is resized, even iso 1600/3200 looks pretty clean on fb...

I've tried a 5D1 at 3200 expanded iso and its far cleaner than my 3100 at 1600

5D classic being a FF camera, I dun think the ISO is any lousier then d3100 despite its age (camera age).

aiyo ff sensor and apsc sensor how to compare.

Ok.. What if you took a 5D1 and a 1D2 to compare.. One ff one not, but ones a pro camera

I haven't used a 1D2 before, though I've handled and tested the 1D2s once. I would pick the 5D1 over the 1D2 or 1D2s anytime. I don't like the 1D2s controls and the weight.

Ya, D90 and 5D are 2 different level. how to compare?

I've used both on more than one occasion. I liked the color for the D90 and speed but the FF in 5D.
