Well, what I did is to take 8 continuous shots of the same subject, and time how long it takes for the buffer to empty its contents into the cards.

30 secs for 512MB card, and 15 secs for 256MB card.

Those RiData cards that I bought from AP, do come with a 1 year warranty...

Ridata and all the others got no warranty.

As far as I am concern, it does make a diff if 1 picture that you take is 10MB (RAW), or when you are taking continuous shots and want to clear the buffer fast, in order to proceed with the next around of multiple shots...

I mean, do we really need a bleeding high speed of card? My camera is G3, and I am just a casual shooter. Very seldom use a continuous shooting. Am I right to say that writing speed only will affect those that use continuous shooting alot

Well, I use continuous mode a lot nowadays (kiasu, mah). Yesterday I was taking some pictures of a birthday party, and when the time came for the birthday girl to blow out the candles, the D30 was still busily writing to the card. Needless to say, I missed the shot.

Lucky not my daughter. :p

Thats what I meant. If you take a long continuous shooting. And for a 10MB image size, I believe one can really feel the diff.

There is a difference between different CF cards and also different cameras. Generally, the DSLR from Nikon have really fast write speeds. The CF speeds drop in prosumer and consumer cameras. In addition, certain brands are well known to be slow. For eg. Digiland and Sandisk. That is why, Sandisk has Ultra now to keep up with competition. In general, taking single shots, ur write time should not be more than 2-3 sec. However, if u really want to stress the CF card, u can shoot larger files to really appreciate the difference.

Just a follow-up note:

I discovered that although the Transcend 512MB is one of the fastest-rated CF cards, most of the performance tests were done with D60 or 1D (or maybe the Nikon DSLR's).

The D30 has a problem with this card (at least MY D30 and MY Transcend 512MB 25X card). I assume it's because the new controller used in the card is poorly backward compatible with the older D30 card-writing firmware, which is a bit picky about which controllers it will work well with. This is a bit of an obscure issue, which is why I am highlighting it for the benefit of other D30 owners.

Someone else also suggested that it's because the 512MB card simply has more space to verify before writing to it. I'm not a hardware engineer, so I'll take his word for it.

Anyway, I managed to swop my 512MB for 2 x 256MB cards, which I tested to be as fast as my Transcend 256MB. So I'm happy.

So that would probably apply to the new Transcend 30x CFs too?:what:

The best thing you can do is borrow one and try before buying.

WHO CAN I BORROW FROM????!!!!!

Who is Clubsnapper? How do I contact him?

phew...luckily my TwinMos 512MB works fine...

btw, what kind of problem u experiencing?

cannot write at all? or extremely slow speed?

Is ivor the same person as IVOR?

If so, if u are around BK tomorrow, can I just quickly pop in the transcend 512 and see how it performs on my 5050?
