50mm Summarit

Hey guys,

I've got and M2 and a 50mm rigid at the moment, i was thinking of a 50 lux to replace it since i really like the 50mm length.

looking around, the summarit keeps popping up. I know the lux is unbeatable, but how far away is the summarit?

Thanks a million!

Cheers
JT

If you like the bokeh...... best used with a hood.

I didn't know the 50 summarit's bokeh is like this!

Gorgeous photos, hacker. As hacker has so aptly demonstrated, the summarit gets a undeserved bad reputation for being soft, flarey, blah blah blah. I've seen butchered lux shots as well so that argument does not hold water. It's all in the hands of the user, a stunning shot is a stunning shot. Bokeh is highly subjective I reckon, some would love this (like me) and some wouldn't. IMHO you can't go wrong with a summarit, considering that it is significantly cheaper than the lux but realize that both render bokeh very differently. The rit has the old skool swirlies and the lux, well, a controlled creaminess.

thanks for the samples!

I'm a sucker for swirly bokeh! honestly, it's the softness that bothers me. it seems to be the common understanding (deserved or not, i'm asking) that they're all soft and mucked up with low contrast.

would you consider the summarit much softer than even a version 1 lux wide open? i guess stopped down, its much better yeah?

thanks!

Hi JT, you need to define what you are looking for, what do you want as a photographer, portraits, streetlife, landscapes etc. etc.? What style of shooting do you tend towards. the rit will always be softer than a lux v1, however they are lenses from different generations, so you cannot compare the two. You can however, compare the older versions to the newer versions and may as well now go into the debate of pre-asph vs asph. All these have a price point, you pay for what you want. Every lens stopped down can be pin sharp (unless you are a pixel peeper..in that case then you need a cron which is a different issue altogether). Hackers shots clearly show how "sharp" or "unsharp" the summarit is, now its up to your "taste" to see if you like it or not. It looks good to me.

You also need to define what "mucked up" means? Low contrast doesn't mean it's bad either.... lots of, primarily. b/w shooters prefer low contrast which preserves details. After all contrast is easily adjusted during PP. Then with low contrast you have the issue of micro contrast, yet another ballgame. Each level = more $$$

My favorite lens is the summar, even older than the rit and its pin sharp, at least in my eyes, its uncoated, goes only to f12.5 and its slow (f2), has wonderful bokeh and great tones... but I shoot it with only b/w. The Rit is also one of the mainstays on my camera.

So if you are decided on what you want, its easier to advise. Cheers, Dan

I thought this thread was about the new summarit.... Hmm no love of it eh.... I"m eyeing on the 35 =)

The next closest to 50lux compare to f stop is the Summarit f1.5.
The new summarit is f2.5 bro. :) The new summarit 35/f2.5 is a good lens! buy buy buy:thumbsup:

The rendition of Leitz Summarit 50/1.5 that I know looks more like this pix as opposed to those posted here.

Why such great difference?? film vs digital? (Then again this one is also digital (M9) but doesn't show such strange color leh! Could it be just due to overcooked PP :dunno:

Very well said master Dan!
So when can I carry ur tripod? :bsmilie:

JT : You might want to look into the next budget Canon LTM 50/f1.4!
Great lens! Good on both color & B&W. That's if u find a good copy.
If you are look at only Leica lenses. Just save up and buy a Noctilux and end of story for 50mm. Just kidding. :bsmilie:

Nikkor 50/f1.4 might be the one for you too.

Summarit f1.5 SM mount.

Do not have a digital RF to compare.
Just by look at both pictures. The picture on M9 did some PP I feel?
But, by looking at the glow, softness and bokeh it does look like Summarit f1.5.

Digital vs film. To me a good pictures is a yes or no question.
Be it digital or film. Both look the same to me. Thats how I feel.:p

Cocoa is absolutely and very politely spot on as well in his observations, at some stage, if love au naturale photos then its all up to your skill at exposure as well as composition and use of the characteristics of the lens. However at some point, even if you shoot film and develop it yourself, your creativity and what the shot "needs" may lead you to mask, dodge and burn etc which is unfortunately, now being done digitally. Regardless it is still PP. If you are a purist, the negative is already "PP"ed once you scan for upload. It only matters if you like the signature of the lens and it fits your budget/shooting style/needs, then all else can be or cannot be adjusted.

eamesboy's lovely shots make the Rit look like a sonnar, nonetheless it was still shot with a Rit, PP or not (btw eamesboy is my favorite shutterbug so I may be biased here :bsmilie:)

BTW JT if you decide you like the RIT, the rigid cron fits me...;)

Totally agree Hacker! The hood is a must for outdoor.
But, the price for the hood is crazy $$$. :p

Nice Pic!
