I guess you shd create a new thread for your quires, as this thread is for discussion on "50mm or 85mm".

all the talk about what focal length for what is nonsense..

i think you should get the 50/1.4; the 85/1.8 is long for baby shots.

House big, get 85mm. House small, get 50mm. ;)

If you think it's not sharp. It's not suppose to be sharp wide open for the EF 50mm f1.8 II.
Step down the aperture to f/2.8 then try again.

Then again, if you can afford both the 50 f/1.4 and 85 f/1.8. Then just upgrade.
The 50mm is mainly used for half body portrait while the 85mm for headshots.

dnt think 50mm is not sharp, shooting baby maybe too noisy and too slow to lock focus...

Thanks for the help just got the EF 50mm f1.4 USM.
Happy with it. Find it much better than the EF 50mm f1.8 II

For the diff in price, it should be... :)

Wait till you try the 85F1.8's focusing speed (compared to the 50F1.4), than you would also see a diff. :bsmilie:

Yup, its a noticable difference in focusing speed..

So is the 85mm significantly faster in focussing speed? Thanks

Well, sometimes it is not always the case. Take 85L for example. the 85 f/1.8 will beat 85L on focusing speed anytime (in fact, most lens will also beat 85L's focusing speed...) but, the price of 85 f/1.2 is more than 4 times of the f/1.8 version. ;p

Just got a EF50mm f1.4 about 2 weeks ago. Realised that there is a 'bubble' within the lens (thought its a reflection when i checked the lens, but its not), which cannot be cleaned off. Pictures taken are ok though. Any idea if this is normal or if this is a lens defect? Any advise would be apprecitaed. Thanks.

I would go for the 85 because of the more flattering persepective.

I find it quite sharp when taking close-up at f/8. So I would say this is a sharp lens, but not sharp at wide open. At f/8 is ok.

Typically pg buy the 85 F1.2L for it's built and bokeh. Had tried the lens in both indoor & outdoor portraiture photo shoot, I would say for indoor half body shots (@ F1.2), it's either you get a OOF (shallow DOF) or a very bokeh photo. :bsmilie:

This is a 100% crop of my friend's eye shot at f1.8 on the 50mm f1.8 II.

Decide for yourselves as to whether it is sharp...

For shooting indoors on a crop body, I'd recommend Sigma's 30mm f1.4

I hv both the 50mm f1.8 and the sigma 30mm f1.4. I find the 50mm too tight, the 30mm focal length suits me better, esp for indoor shots. It's used mainly for shooting my kids. :) So u might want to consider the sigma instead.

Hi, how much does sigma 30mm f1.4 cost ? How about canon 35 f/2 ? Is it a good lens ?

I'd take the 30mm 1.4 over the 35mm f2 any day if you're on crop

I use a 35mm, while 35 also gotta move back quite a bit to capture full body.
You can consider 30mm or even 24mm.

Just kinda wish they have 35mm and 50mm with full ring USM...

The micro USM is the reason I have not yet added the 50mm, and wish they will update their old primes with USM....

I think the 85mm is the better spec due to the Ring USM... but it is really tight on crop cam.... better for head shots... full body, maybe 35mm/ 50mm.....

85mm 1.8 is solid. Fast AF. Sharp. Bokeh is sick.

50mm 1.4 is a tad soft, but for full-body portrait, i find it pretty ok, despite on a 1.6x body

No regret for both really. But these observation is on an outdoor shoot basis.
