I've posted some pics taken with the 50 f/1.2 in other threads, go search it yrself.

since u seem to be fond of quoting yr years of experience, let me , using my more than 10 years of shooting experience and record of winning a few competitions to say that your portraitures are not impressive , an opinon shared by quite many pple. You have not proven yourself and yet have the cheek to pass sacrcastic remarks about others .

U still have no idea at all. Why should i shoot at less than f/2?? Unless i want to create more creamy bokeh especially when taking closer, else this is enough.

well, my take is that a creamier bokeh will make a portrait better if sharpness is not compromised. why shd we pay for so called 'bokeh' lens but not make use of them to create creamier bokeh ? :dunno:

because you want to include the environment in the shot as well to give it some context. but mainly because the dof is usually too shallow or it is not sharp enough wide open and stopping down by 1 stop usually doesn't make a difference in the bokeh rendered.

I feel that the aperture to use is personal preference..

Some might only want the eyes to be sharp, some might want the whole face to be sharp. Some pple feel the bokeh is very important, some pple feel it's more important to have the details and the hair style all in sharp focus.

Artistically, maybe a shallower DOF creates a "nicer" picture.. but not all photographers are "artist". To some pple, a picture of a person where half the face is cropped away may look very nice and artistic, but to another, not showing the whole face is simply bad portrait photography.. this is similar to whether getting the 2 eyes in focus or the whole face (including the ears) in focus.. it's all a matter of personal preferences and style.

Having a F1.2 lens gives added flexibility of thin DOF, but if the photographer prefers a sharper picture in some situations, the max aperture may not be used. How sharp is "enough'" is subjective. To some pple, F1.2 sharpness is enough, to another, if they can have it sharper at F2 or F2.8, why settle for less? But they still get the expensive lens if they can afford it for extra flexibility.

Just my 2cts..

I agree wif wat u said but i was talking in the context of the pic posted by Snoweagle...

agree . it's all subjective .

chill guys. Let's not get personal. Let's keep this forum friendly and keep negative comments to yourself.

Back to TS question. He deliberately left out the 85mm, so I assumed he already have this lens and am looking for another prime to addon.

I read somewhere that the 35L, 85L and 135L are the trinity of primes. 35mm provides full body, 85mm half body and 135mm head shoots. I find the 50mm to be neither here nor there. If you use 50mm to take full body, you also capture a lot of surrounding space (can be cropped). If you use 50mm to take half body, you have to move really close and may get a more pronounce facial features. However, if you are not fussy, the 50mm is a very versatile lens in that one lens can be used like a 35 and 85 by moving forward and backwards. It can also be a general purpose lens. So it really depends on TS requirement to use the lens with a more general purpose or one that is tele. I do have some problem with 135L due to lack of IS. Maybe TS can consider the 100L that is due to be released.

The 100L is the only one of the listed primes that have IS..

Maybe the 50L is for the serious PG with a cropped sensor.. (like the 7D).. so 50L with 7D is like 85L with 5D..

I've nearly 20 years of shooting experience btw and so u mean to say u're very gd? Then show it. :bsmilie: I've never said myself to be a pro since i joined this forum nearly 5 years ago cos i'm just a hobbyist but too a special interest in portraitures.

So then why pple who own sports cars who can reach up to 200+km/h speeds drive at that speed? If not wasted mah. Then SG government should also revise the speed limits to accomodate these cars so not very wasted rite? :bsmilie:

To be more specific, if you r so worried about the 50L, get the Sigma f1.4. It is 1/4 the price and not far from the performance. Keep the 70-200f2.8IS. It is not as sharp as 135L at f2.8 but I feel it gives a soft look ideal for portrait. You can zoom farther to 150 or 180mm for more OoF and creamier bokeh. If you need it to be sharp, step down to f4. The IS also allows for higher keepers rate at slower speed, useful for evening shoots.

This thread is around for quite sometime and I see more words than photos to prove a point. IMHO, a photographer shoots what he likes to see and if he can develop his own style and make it popular and pleasing to the majority, then, success will follow. I don't own a 50L, but I am sure it's an extremely good lens for a good photographer to display his skills. Personally I prefer to appreciate and give encouraging comments in simple terms that will not lead to any misconception. I am a photographer since 1963 and I am not shy to say that I am still learning. Art has no frontier.

I suspect that Canon launches this macro lens more for the APS-C so that they can use it like a EF180mm macro (160mm for the 100L on a APS-C). Else they would have used larger barrel diameter and front lens elements of 72mm such as that of 135L, 180L for more light to pass through. So the secondary market may only be for the FF users.

I doubt so, if the rumoured 200mm f/3.5L IS USM to replace the current 180mm one is true.

ha, did I say that I am very good ? maybe gd enuff to see that yr portraitures are mediocre at best :sweatsm:

yup, i do find that they are wasting their money . period.

u guys really very cute leh... one with 10+ yrs experience, another with 20+ years experience, which means u guys are already 30+ or 40+ yrs at least... but yet u guys are quarreling like wat i always did in primary school...

imagine:
a) hey look here i got the orange tamiya car sticker!
b) only a orange tamiya car, i got the special shiny sticker of the blue car!
a) but the blue car is the slowest, mine orange although not shiny but its the fastest!
b) i dun care if its the fastest, its shiny thats all i care...

alrite, stop the quarreling, and i hope the 2 masters here can post more pics taken by the 50mm f1.2. that would be more appreciated by thread viewers like me, whom is thinking of getting it.
