I went from a 500D to a 50D and enjoying it very much....if you do decide to get the 500D my lesson leant is to get the 18-200mm Kit II.....

yeah when i got my 50D i regretted not getting the 18-200...but then again...18-55 allows u to take macro shots better than any other efs lenses. that's why even when i upgraded from it, i still kept it. it's a useful tool.

Wow, okaey.

Hmm.. now..
I know I won't be waiting for the newer models cuz I'll be going to HK for a 4 days trip on the 23rd this month :]
Hope I can take lots of sweet pictures with my new 500D! ;]

Another question,
Since I like taking Bokeh,
Is the 18-200mm a good lens for it?
Especially if I'm taking pictures like say, 150mm-200mm?
Extra info (personal opinion) on the +/- of the lens would be great!
(I did some readings on the reviews, don't worry :] Just want all your opinions)
I'm still deciding on the lens and I definitely wouldn't wanna regret not getting whichever lens I prefer, after getting it!

I believe the 18-200mm from Canon is a better lens compared to say,
Tamron's or Sigma's.

Should I also get the EF 50mm f1.8 II since it's an inexpensive lens?

I don't know how good a photographer I am now,
but I believe I am definitely not THAT bad since I have been playing with my E420 since April'09 :]
I enjoy taking candid shots of everyday life,
however sometimes since they move a lot it would turn out blur and of course it's sad :(
Especially in low-light, it's nearly impossible to have nice pictures (Especially at 42mm).
My 14-42mm lens doesn't have IS, I wonder if it makes a lot of difference.
I prefer not using the camera's flash too.

Once again I thank all who have responded,
Your advices and opinions are much appreciated! ;D

If you want really nice, creamy bokeh, get one of the fixed focal length prime lenses. Canon's primes are awesome for narrow depth of field/ bokeh quality.

18-200mm at 200mm f/5.6 can "create" bokeh due to compression of background. However the bokeh is not those creamy background blur.

E.g. with a wide aperture lens, 50mm f/2.2 notice the background blur.

At f/1.4 it will be creamier, but depth of field will be ultra shallow.

i second this...well that's of cuz unless you're on FF and then f/2.8 is enuff.

It shall most prolly be the 18mm-200mm then! :]
And also the 50mm 1.8f.

Thanks people for all the help!
Comments and opinions are still very much welcome! ;)

Ya, 50mm F1.8 is very value for money.
Personal experience says that Tamron 17-50mm is quite a good one. I like the F2.8. (However that zoom range is not as much as 18-200mm;p)

I agree. I would pick the Tammy 17-50 over the 18-200 anyday for pure image quality. But thats just me because I would use it for events, especially indoor events more than I would find the extra zoom range useful outdoor.

situation applies me as well.
i either take indoor shots, or landscape shots.
when outdoor, i usually take portraits shot.
rarely need to zoom that far.

Hi TS, Go for 18-200mm. It's good travel lens.

I got 500d kit 1 and found that 18-55 a bit short in term of range and later bought an used 18-200mm later for year end holiday. I am quite satisfy with its performance and recommend you to go for it.

50mm1.8 is has good IQ, but i often got oof picture. I think still need to practise. Nothing wrong with the lens though.

OT abit, for 50mm F1.8 try stopping it down to F2.8 if you don't really need the bokeh. It's much sharper.

x2. 2.8 is the sweet spot for the 50 f1.8. And thats still fast enough for indoor shooting. :) My biggest complain about that lens is that its AF is loud and noisy, and occasionally misses.

Wow thanks klkow!
You saved my dilemma!
3 consecutive posts suddenly talk about Tamron's 17-50mm!
I have the 14-42mm and sometimes I just wished I had the extra 50mm or even more!

What about bags?
And what's good to grab from HK?
Haha thank you guys so much for all your support!

But i still keep 18-55. It is light and compact, much preferred lens for indoor use with flash.

Buying photography stuff in HK? HK price may be cheaper compared to sg. But, warranty is something u should consider.
May visit this site (by ting cheung) for price comparison.

hope it helps.

If got budget, get 500D body only. Then get the 17-55, very sharp and good for travel walk about not much use for 200mm zoom use the wide more often during travel, unless you want to zoom in to a chio hong kong babe and shoot some photos for us to enjoy :). Btw, just got back from Hong Kong, bloody cold, and the photography stuffs are not as cheap as last time...so sad...looks like their inflation factor is higher then ours.

if u are getting 500d dun get 18-55 kit 1 then buy extra 18-200 kit 2 lens. IMO waste money on the lens cos kit 1 package compare to kit 2, u will be paying more for the body.

agree

When i started using 50D, i thought i was holding a toy when i used my friends 500D :D

BUT, both are awesome cameras. BTW, why not consider buying just the body, den 2nd Hand lenses? could save u a few bucks on that :)

Typically between the two camera unless you need the burst speed, for IQ the lens matter more than body.
