guys, for the 500d, i just got it ytd @ john's place..finally decided to go for canon, for the lenses i will have to look for EF-S mount??

U can use EF lens also although EF-S lens would probably be more in your range. Lighter and cheaper, probably a more suitable especially if you don’t intend to go Full Frame (5DII or 1Ds) anytime.

See my sig? the First two are EF-S lens while the 50 F1.8 is an EF prime lens.

500d ? it will be better if u get a equote from those shops. Can try emailing those imo reputable shops like Alan photo, MScolor, Cathay, John 3:16 for their prices first :D

Oh no. Most of them are currently out of stock! =(
Man, but I just called another shop they say they have it.
Gonna go down and check it out.
Hopefully I can get a good price for it! =D

Btw i got mine at mscolor. . quite gd price though but i tink i kana cheated on the extra sd card from one of the foreign stuff . .wonder if i can get it change. . i haven open yet oso . . zzz

Yay! I got it! Finally!
Haha, at John's :]
Phew.
I always wanted to get it from them!

At first, Canon helped me to check and asked me to get from Bally's.
Boy, I went down and searched for quite some time and in the end found the shop.
Damn the shop, I don't think they actually wanna do any business -.-
When I called, this Tommy guy said it'd definitely be cheaper than Canon, but they refused to disclose the amount.
When I reached there, he told me a whole new story.
"Now Canon sell separate already.
Body one box, lens one box.
So the price also different."
Very pissed off, especially after he told me the price,
which is like $2k+ just for that kit!

I went back to John's and asked them if I could like reserve or place an order from them.
After waiting, they told me they are willing to take the 50D's 18-200mm lens and sell it to me first! Wow. I was stunned.
Haha, so I got it from them in the end.
Got a better bag. Wanted to get the Tote bag but decided not to.
I didn't get the speedlite, so saved some $$.
Got a Hoyu UV filter and screen protector :]
Too bad their 50mm 1.8 went out of stock, but I'd go down 2ml to get it, with the book they 'owed'.

Took a few pictures and my batt went dead, lol.
I am now officially a 500D user! XD

Once again, thanks guys for all the help you have given!
Happy shooting!

Congrats enjoy your new love and continue taking photos!

I remember when I first got my nifty fifty (50 f1.8) I was so impressed by the shallow DOF or ‘bokeh’ as some call it and couldn’t stop taking pics with it. LOL

I have used 450D and 50D for a quite a while now and find that the quality from both are quite the same except the megapixel diff. I'd recommend you to get 500D+Tamron 17-50 f2.8 lens. Kit lens is a trash to me in terms of IQ but I still like the IS.

Guys im also deciding between the 500D and 50D..but currently more inclined on a 50D mainly because it feels so much more solid in my hands. I dont think i need the extra burst speed of the 50D compared to the 50D.
I probably will go into 'sports' photography(taking pictures of RC helicopters actually)...and i read something about the 50D's 9 cross sensors having an advantage over the 500D's single cross sensor with respect to AF ability.

I also think the 50D will feel better balanced with those heavier lenses.

I intend to get with the 18-200mm kit lens initially then in the near future get the EF-S 17-55mm F2.8. Im not sure if its wise to have 2 lenses whose F length overlap to such a large extent...or would I be better off buying the body only then get a 18-55mm and 55-250mm off B&S section..then get the 17-55mm F2.8 once i've got the moolah again?

Anyone got any experience using both cameras and have violent objection of one over the other?

I work with a sports magazine (design side) and their photographers told me that sports photography is easily the most expensive genre. You’re right that the 50D is more sturdy and balanced. For that reason the said photographer also recommended the 7D over the full frame 5DII, better fps and better reach.

More importantly, its the lens you should think about. If you want to try to shoot for pro standards, a 70-200 f4L is at least probably the min. Not entirely cheap, esp IS version.

Strongly against 18-200 for this application. A good, convenient lens it may be, but Since you’ve already decided to one day get the 17-55, it makes less sense to shoot for something as expensive as the 18-200 that you’ll one day replace with the 17-55 as your main walkaround.

Get a 18-55 IS (actually noted to have excellent macro among the EF-S lens) and either a 55-250 IS or 70-300 IS USM. Both have less barrel distortion and more reach than 18-200. Cheaper too. Helps u start ur savings plan for the 17-55.

On that note my own savings plan for the 17-55 is about to mature! :P

You’re right that the 50D is more sturdy and balanced, thou for sports you might prefer the continous fire mode of the 500D.

why would a sports photographer prefer 3fps (500D) vs 6.3fps (50D)?

My mistake then. Corrected.

On the contrasty on this statement, having used the Canon 18-200mm IS and had bought the Tamron 17-50 (cheaper alt to the Canon 17-55), the 18-200 remain my fav lens during my walkaround session.

For delicate photography like portraiture, sports & events, I may change to my other lenses (primes, 17-50, 70-200F2.8IS, etc). But for everything that don't require me to shoot at F2.8 and below, the Canon 18-200mm IS is still my ideal choice.

Ahh..thanks for your advice!
What you say does make sense. I also dont intend to shoot much telephoto so yeah...

Will probably get the 50D body only then get the 18-55mm and 55-250mm lens from B&S. Dun think there's any point getting the lenses brand new right? I see so many of these lenses available in B&S..lol

On a side note...anyone interested in getting either the EF-S 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 IS or EF-S 17-85mm F4-5.6 IS USM?

I wouldn't mind sharing the savings with someone else cos i wannna get the body only

500d normal screen protector only covers the main screen. It's border which cover the whole glass is not covered. Custom ones covered the whole screen cost 20 bucks. The guy did a great job on it. Alternatively, u can get those hp protector n cut urself oso
