because i not sure which one to get.
canon 500d or nikon d5000 !~
both i also like. but the mater is the price is more 100 sgd nia .
so any pros advice? sorry for noob qns :(

Hi Racing Heart,
I’m in the same situation as u, deciding which one...500D or D5000.
The pro about D5000 are the flip LCD screen, which is useful for taking photos at unusual angles, the noise performance (at higher ISO level) seems to be better than 500D according to some reports posted on the web.
The con are (also) the flip LCD screen, seems fragile, no built-in motor for AF, no battery grip, have to pay for RAW-JPEG conversion software & a bit pricey.
For 500D, almost everything seems good except for the flip LCD screen & the noise performance.
This is just my opinion.

LOL nw u got the point tats y i seldom come into this thread. Its the same as '500D Gathering & Outing Thread' its just name and location of peep staying in which part etc without the actual org of gathering and outing. Except for 1 or 2 haha.

well.. it's supposed to share and care about the camera and it's features and ups n downs.. but it seems like it's going nowhere? :bsmilie:

Bingo lol hmm we might as well open a new thread for 500D lol ;)

The users are just coming in to fill up their names..

So far I have used the camera for wedding shoots and birthday event shoots... photos developed are pretty bright and sharp with kit lens.. of course with borrowed 580ex flash..

I went for couple of shoot (F1, SIN, Drift, personal car shoot, group) etc but yet to develop the print. But find that its kind of sharp the only disadvantage of the kit lens limits the zoom tats y i get the 55-250 lens for those motor event shoot.

Got a 50mm but yet to test out for the portrait shot but i find thats its a very good lens. if attached the with reversal macro adaptor its beautiful.

Not to mention the video capability its very clear and sharp, but i find sometimes its abit laggy.

Hey does anyone know of a way to turn on 1/3 and 1/2 stop ISOs like 64, 160, 1000 etc? The only way i know thus far is to shoot under and tweak up in RAW, and its hardly convenient.

Is the kit 1 lens good for low-light/night shots hand-held (average stability)

Hi Bro

Sorry to disappoint you its not good for low light shoot unless you burst up the ISO.

As for night shot its advisable to have a tripod instead of hand-held.

you can refer to http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=573723

We had went to Barriage for a nite shoot once the result i should say its quite good. But still have to improve on the skill.

just wondering what's the point of being able to tweak the ISO so precisely?

I'm just thinking playing with F/stop and shutter speed is more practical

Either way, the flexibility is always better. I suppose people rather have the happy problem of having too many options rather than no options at all.

Having in-betweens help to minimize noise while keeping the other variables achievable esp shutter speed

Hi ppl,

can i check if 500d with kit lens of 18-55mm is it enough for holiday or is it better to just get 18-200mm?

I am wondering if 18-200 is the choice, what other types of lens will be require for holiday shooting ?

Kindly advise as i am new. Thanks alot

get the 18-200mm.. gives you more range.. i got the kit I lenses and the zoom is really quite limited..

Guys, great  to see discussion going on the 500D and lenses.....rather than just adding names

The kit 1 len 18~55mm is rather good for landscape/cityscape. If you need wider angle, mount on tripod and shoot 2 or 3 shots and join them together in photoshop.

wow almost 200 ppl already my gosh... act i just tried out the my friends 450D with the kit lens yest, it kinda sucks with the zoom range.. not good at all for portraits unless you can get close to your subjects. though its really light, i think a longer lens would be better like the 17-85. 18-200 would pretty much cover everything but reviews rate its barrel distortion pretty bad. never tried one though. the build quality (18-55mm) is also really poor, everytime i zoom in or out it feels like something is going to break or has broken already.

Wonder when the firmware update will be out....looking forward to the correction for sharpness..

I would recommend the 18-200 for holiday trips. It'll save you from having to switch lenses and missing photo opportunities. It's true that it has pretty wild barrel distortion (from the review photos) but you'll really only notice if you have straight lines near the borders e.g. buildings, but the convenience factor is the strong point of this lens.
I'm personally interested in the new EF-S 15-85mm but the price is quite scary  which is a shame, the ring USM and 4-stop IS together is very tempting. Guess I'll wait for the reviews and the price to drop some before taking the plunge.

Do you use a battery grip together with the 580EX? If not, how is the weight and balance of the 500D body (without grip)+SpeedLite? Is it top heavy?

Hi guys, since the 500D does not have a AF assist lamp, does it mean that I have to pop up the flash to AF and push it back down if I do not want the flash to fire in my shots?

hello everyone... i m new in dslr... ^^
