My 2nd post =)
I got mine at Audiohouse (Liang Court). Scouted around, seems the only place that comes with a 30L dry box. (Read around that the dry box is important)

Got the EF-S 18-200mmIS Kit for $2099 with
1) Canon camera bag
2) Memory card 8G x2
3) 30L Dry cabinet
4) Tripod

Use MF when recording video. I find their Auto-Focus * not very intuitive and adds that loud "Zzzzzzzzzzzt" sound to the playback.

Just remember to switch back to AF when you're done.

Ok ah, I find the video at 720 / 30fps can be sharp with 18-55 kit and colour good. I used AviSynth to convert MOV to H264 avi. Size so much smaller with not much IQ loss.

Yah, totally agreed that Auto focusing during recording is a bad idea. MF is the best work-around if you need re-focusing at the moment.

Good idea with the conversion to H264 avi :thumbsup:. Currently my 2.5mins 1280x720 30fps video is 500+MB :sweat:

if u did some research sigma 50mm DG hsm f1.4 is much ex compare to canon 50mm f1.8, you should consider canon 50mm f1.4 USM for comparison

Hi, anyone has comments on the video function of 500D? I tried it out, and find that although it's HD size, the colour and contrast of the video is not good, may I even say lousy. My point and shoot camera can take better video than 500D, abeit not HD size. Is it just me or you all feel that way as well?

Is it worth the trouble?
My friend came round to show me his new EOS 500D this evening. I found a new but spare canon RC-4 lying around at home so I gave it to him. It was marked as list-price, S$40. We tried it and it works well with his camera.

That said, for a 2-day old EOS camera ... it is already broken. Something was wrong with the AE lock button... so he's taking it back to the shop tomorrow to complain.

It does come handy especially night photography.

Welcome to the 500D club,

1) Filter - Since you're getting the 18-200 lens, I would think a UV filter is necessary to protect your lens (investment). B+W, Hoya and Tokina (Expensive, Mid-range, Economical) are some of the reputable brand on the market. Here's a UV filter review for your reference. Choose 1 which suits your budget. As for the need of CPL, only you can answer this. I personally bought a Hoya 72mm CPL as I would occasionally take some landscape.

2) Bag - You can try out the free EOS bag first. It will be able to take the 500D+18-200 and 50mm f1.8 II. If you need additional space or comfort, Lowepro has wide range of bags to meet different needs. Cathay Photo (Peninsula Plaza) have quite a number of bags on display. Go and try out before you decide.

3) Hoods - Personally, I will use a hood if it is provided, if not I don't mind without it. But if you shoot a lot of outdoor with the sun/light frequently around your composition, maybe a 3rd party hood would be sufficient :dunno:

4) Dry Cabinet - If you think that photography will be a long term hobby, a dry cabinet is a MUST. Digi-Cabi has a good and reasonable range . Could purchase from Carrefour (5% discount with POSB Everyday card), free delivery for $150 and above.

Sigma 50mm F1.4 and Canon 50mm F1.8 II are quite different in terms of performance and price. Sigma 50 F1.4 is about $800 while Canon 50 F1.8 is about $100+. In fact, Sigma 50 F1.4 is more expensive than Canon 50 F1.4 ($500-600). I went for the Sigma because I love the bokeh and sharpness @ f/1.4-2.0. But not everyone likes to shoot @ f/1.4-2.0, so read-up and play with your 18-200 before deciding on acquiring more lenses.

After testing his camera at ISO 3200. I was simply impressed at how well noise is controlled. TBH I couldn't see any noise at all.

Sigma 50mm F1.4 and Canon 50mm F1.8 II are quite different in terms of performance and price. Sigma 50 F1.4 is about $800 while Canon 50 F1.8 is about $100+. In fact, Sigma 50 F1.4 is more expensive than Canon 50 F1.4 ($500-600). I went for the Sigma because I love the bokeh and sharpness @ f/1.4-2.0. But not everyone likes to shoot @ f/1.4-2.0, so read-up and play with your 18-200 before deciding on acquiring more lenses.

500D owners should do like what the 5D2 owners did, lobby Canon to update the firmware to allow manual adjustment for video recording. I tested my dad's camera again, and under normal fluorescent lighting, the video flickers. Unless you have manual adjustment for shutter speed at least, you will find in auto mode, this is quite annoying.
