sorry .. to all the experts here.
some shops tell me get the latest 1000D is better becos it is the latest model.
Dont get a old model for cameras, is it true ?
Don't listen to what the salesman tell you, of course they will always jump on the "new is better" spiel to trick customers into believeing the "latest is the greatest".

Always do your homework and compare specs first before taking the plunge. Newer does not always necessarily mean better.

I thinking of gettiing the kit offer for one og the DSLR.

450D EF S18-55IS
1000D EFS 18-55
What is IS?

Are the lens good for shooting sports, landscape pictures?

the 18-55 models are likely not to be suitable for sports unless you're right by the field AND it's an outdoor sports. the aperture (3.5-5.6 IIRC) isn't quick enough unless you're in blazing sunlight, and won't cut it at all for indoors.

as for landscapes, they should be fine, and i hear that the IS version is completely re-engineered for better optics than the original version.

not true. get one based on your needs and budget. if "newest=best" then nobody would be wanting the 3-year old 5D model (i'm thinking of getting one btw)

Thanks Garion and Charles.
$300 difference, im considering ... hee

Currently Canon having promotion to get 55mm - 200mm lens if buy 40D, 450 or 1000D.

Will a 55mm - 200mm be able to shoot aircraft in flight, such as fighter jets in the coming RSAF open house ?

:dunno:

I believe when it's mounted on 40D or 450D, you will be able to capture it since it is pretty bright.

Not sure, about 1kD

Wonder if the poll of which one to choose: 450D or 1000D is rather skewed to the favour of 450D? It is, plainly speaking, a better camera. It is like comparing a Mercedez S class to a E class, it is different class as it has to justify the price difference.

Having tried both at the shops, 450D feels so much comfortable in my hands though it is heavier than the 1000D.

after some careful thoughts, 1000D prob for some short term use which you will not be satisfied by it anymore.

yes 450D is heavier by 20g but i guess that should make too much of a difference.:)

voted 450D as 1000D handles like a plastic....

In case you guys missed this: the 1000D has the 10 MP sensor that performs better at low IOS than the 450D. If you attempt to perform HDR with a single ISO 100 RAW shot from the 450D 12 MP sensor, you'll be disturbed by the noise in the shadows. On the other hand, the 12 MP sensor performs much better at high ISO than the 10 MP sensor.

believe you are talking about the 55-250 zoom lens... I have one and I got it for 320 in OP vs 459 as advertised by Canon...

and yeah it can catch the jets... just pray that it will be sunny... last airshow was cloudy and I got dark shots :(

are there any restrictions on cameras/lenses you can bring to RSAF open house?

Pondering and pondering.
Finally decided on 450D......... got it yesterday.

cheers!!!

but totally new to the DSLR world. =)

I bought the Kiss F aka 1000D in Japan due to cheaper pricing (in Japan, kit is Yen 59,000 vs Yen 71,000) and less weight.

Just wanna say that Garion's impression is spot on.
Had a chance to compare these 2 in a duty free shop side by side.
One might want to consider his impression as a guide.

Thanks Garion.

Just hands-on the 1kD (1000D) and 450D side by side at the Canon showroom, here are some of my brief thots (note: this ain't a full in-depth review)

Side by side comparison: Both cameras remarkably similar in size, form and function. No real difference in weight...the 450D is perhaps just slightly heavier but not really noticeable in use.

Handling/build: 450D is slightly better...the 450D rubberized grip is easier to hold on too compared to 1kD's grip. The 1kD's grip feels too plasticky and smooth and it is really uncomfortable to hold for long periods of time if you have large hands (like me). I can't imagine holding it with a large L lens attached. One irritating aspect about the 1kD is that the LCD can't seem to be turned off manually, and there is no sensor that autodetects ur face and switches it off automatically unlike the 450D. Build wise I feel the 450D is better off, if only marginally.

Viewfinder: This is where the 450D trumps the 1kD hands down. This alone I feel is worth the price difference between the two cameras. The difference is quite a lot! The 450D's vf is clearly much brighter, bigger and clearer than the 1kD's. With the 1kD I felt myself squinting thru the vf...it was still as dim and tiny as in the 400D. If you do more than 80% of ur shooting thru vf and not Liveview, this is a very important factor and I would recommend 450D over 1kD, especially also if you wear glasses.

Shooting/buffer: For JPG Large Fine mode, the 1kD managed to do about five to six frames in continous shooting mode before the buffer jammed up. The 450D is better in this aspect...about 9 frames continous before buffer full. In RAW mode the 1kD fared very poorly...only about 3 frames can taken before the buffer full and the writing took forever (maybe coz of the card used also lar...not a hi-speed one)

LCD: again like the viewfinder, the 450D's is bigger, clearer and better all round.

Conclusion: Unless you're really really desperately cash strapped or refuse to shell out the ~$200-300 difference between the bodies, I would feel that the 450D is overall a much better package than the 1kD and thus it gets my vote. The swaying factor for me was the viewfinder issue - I simply hate small dim viewfinders...but again YMMV...whether u feel the ~$200-$300 in savings is worth for you, the 1kD is an decent body...just not fantastic. To be honest, it feels more like a 'rehashed 400D' than a new body.

hi bros. m new to this forum as well as to DSLR. M thinking of getting one and m choosing betwn these 2 models.
Is it true that 450D has no inbuilt IS? (while 1KD has?)

The main things u shld consider is actually the Focus points, LCD screen and the grip.
These are wat i consider where i found 450D more comfortable for me.
