After even more careful thoughts, I have decided to get a 1000D for myself.

The reason is that even though the 450D has the best high ISO performance among all the APS-C cameras, it's also the poorest at low ISO (try pulling back the details in dark shadows). For landscape and HDR photography, that is not quite acceptable.

The 400D sensor (now on the 1000D), on the other hand, is one of the best performing sensors at low ISO (beating out the 20D/30D).

Do update if u managed to find a good deal for the 1kD.. as i'm also interested! thanks alot!

Unfortunately, this won't happen anytime soon. Need to start saving up first. The recent income tax just burnt a hole in my pocket. Sigh...

Does anybody know :-

Can Canon 450D/1000D LCD display a PhotoShop edited photo ?

Just hands-on the 1kD (1000D) and 450D side by side at the Canon showroom, here are some of my brief thots (note: this ain't a full in-depth review)

Side by side comparison: Both cameras remarkably similar in size, form and function. No real difference in weight...the 450D is perhaps just slightly heavier but not really noticeable in use.

Handling/build: 450D is slightly better...the 450D rubberized grip is easier to hold on too compared to 1kD's grip. The 1kD's grip feels too plasticky and smooth and it is really uncomfortable to hold for long periods of time if you have large hands (like me). I can't imagine holding it with a large L lens attached. One irritating aspect about the 1kD is that the LCD can't seem to be turned off manually, and there is no sensor that autodetects ur face and switches it off automatically unlike the 450D. Build wise I feel the 450D is better off, if only marginally.

Viewfinder: This is where the 450D trumps the 1kD hands down. This alone I feel is worth the price difference between the two cameras. The difference is quite a lot! The 450D's vf is clearly much brighter, bigger and clearer than the 1kD's. With the 1kD I felt myself squinting thru the vf...it was still as dim and tiny as in the 400D. If you do more than 80% of ur shooting thru vf and not Liveview, this is a very important factor and I would recommend 450D over 1kD, especially also if you wear glasses.

Shooting/buffer: For JPG Large Fine mode, the 1kD managed to do about five to six frames in continous shooting mode before the buffer jammed up. The 450D is better in this aspect...about 9 frames continous before buffer full. In RAW mode the 1kD fared very poorly...only about 3 frames can taken before the buffer full and the writing took forever (maybe coz of the card used also lar...not a hi-speed one)

LCD: again like the viewfinder, the 450D's is bigger, clearer and better all round.

Conclusion: Unless you're really really desperately cash strapped or refuse to shell out the ~$200-300 difference between the bodies, I would feel that the 450D is overall a much better package than the 1kD and thus it gets my vote. The swaying factor for me was the viewfinder issue - I simply hate small dim viewfinders...but again YMMV...whether u feel the ~$200-$300 in savings is worth for you, the 1kD is an decent body...just not fantastic. To be honest, it feels more like a 'rehashed 400D' than a new body.

i am quite new to DSLR and i am planning to get 450D very soon,
but my problem is do you guys recommend me getting 450D body only or 450D kit (18-55mm IS)?

i am thinking if i were to get 450D kit and sell my kit len in the future,
i feel that its quite hard to sell it off.

depends if you have the cash to cough up for a lens to match the body. A good first choice is the tamron 17-50 f2.8 but that's around $750 IIRC. you may not be comfortable (or willing) to spend so much on a first lens

Otherwise, the 18-55IS kit lens has fairly good optics as well as a very useful 4-stop IS (again IIRC).

just my $0.02 worth...

i am not a canon user, but i tried both cam in store before... basically i felt that 450D is more worth it money.. 1000D just make me feel like holding S5 IS (just my personal opinion)

Can any one comment on the 12 bit (1KD) vs 14 bit RAW depth of 450 D on low light imaging like Astro Photography?

I went down to a camera shop today and handled the 1kD. It feels not comfortable to my hands unlike the 450D. In fact before going down to the shop, having read the specs of 1kD, which is lighter and have most of the features I look for in the 450D in the 1kD, it was on paper almost made up my mind to it. Moreover it costs a few hundreds less.

Then nothing beats handling the camera personally and I must say, 1kD just don't suit my handling comfortably. Not yet bought any camera though

IS stands for Image Stabilization. It is very useful. The EFS 18-55 IS is an excellent lens, and reputed to be much better than the old non-IS 18-55 kit lens.

Where can I find a 450D with a discount in Singapore? Thanks.

1000D handling is definitely not as good as 450D.
I was reccommended by the shop for 1000D yesterday.
They say its a entry level budget cam and its the latest model, and they recommended it.

im aso contemplating btw the both and its going to be my first DSLR.
the difference is 250 bucks.

Holding 450D now, and if i have a choice, and more hardworking in testing out the lens.. I would have ditch my kit lens =D

sorry .. to all the experts here.
some shops tell me get the latest 1000D is better becos it is the latest model.
Dont get a old model for cameras, is it true ?

The common sense is to get the latest model, but in this case, from looking at the poll results (thanks to all who polled :)), and from the specifications of both cameras, the 450D is a better camera. So if you can get it at a good price, your choice is clear.

However the 1000D does have its pros and advantages and it will be suitable for people who want a light and no-frills camera for travelling or backup.

do note the specs difference and not just "if its the latest model". (of which comes the price difference etc etc).

was deciding btw these 2 and got my 450D yesterday in the end. :)
