40D User Group

I tried the View Live photo from the view not able to see through the viewfinder at yesterday's friends gathering dinner - shoot from above my height.

And I still don't understand why Canon don't recommend LiveView with the use of CF cards. Can't figure out the reason.

Specs is only on paper. Real world operation is another matter. Even with so much features, does this mean that we will tend to use all the features? My personal opinion is that the most important component of digital is still the control of the cam and the lens.

Real world operation I also mean is how does the image taken will react with Lab machines.

1. Most people who bought the 40D has already invested in the system.

2. The price of the 40D is much much better than the D300.

For me, I won't need the 8FPS. Also, I dislike using a grip. The lack of a lightweight constant aperture 70-200mm pushed me towards switching to Canon. Absolutely love the 70-200mm F4 IS. Certainly an upgrade from the D200 I had been using.

The LCD is the weakest link in the 40D but I never trust the LCD in determining whether the focus is spot on or exposure, or color nor contrast.

I think the mention Micro Drive not CF cards lah. Basically, I think the Live view mode consume more power and so does the micro drives. Therefore combining both will drain away your battery faster. just my thought.

And for the record, in case you all had not discovered it yet. Have you all tried using 2 extender? I did a test but due to leagal reason, I cant post the photo. I mounted my 500mm f4.5 (non IS) lens on my tripod, add my 1.4x TC and 2X TC. manual focus on a $10 bill about 25Meters away using the 10x magnification on the live view. using a cable release, I waited for the image to stablise (heehee no need IS lens liao) and release the shutter.

At 100% crop I can see the lines on the President's face clearly without any sharpening at all. Try that out Guys. 40D rocks. Now I dont need to invest on longer lens.

Er.. have to note that only static subjects can use this method cos the manual focusing and waiting for the image to stablise takes some time. Fast moving subjects are out of the question.

40D white balance is better in my opinion than the 30D. Using both systems. Colour is more neutral in my opinion.

By the way, when I select RAW + XXXL, for the image size, wat does it mean? Will the cam only take 1 picture at RAW setting or 2 pictures ; 1 at RAW PLUS another one at JPEG fine L? Thanx.
