Then get the Sigma 17-50 OS. If still think it is too ex, get the tamron 17-50 non VC.

If you want the best, you have to pay.

Sigma with OS is better than tamaron with vc? How much do they cost around ?

The Tamron 17-50 VC has been reported to be slightly inferior in IQ when compared to the cheaper non-VC one.

And Sigma 17-50 OS is pretty much the one with the best IQ of the bunch behind Nikon's own 17-55.

SLRR quote from a couple of weeks ago was at 1039 for Sigma 17-50 OS HSM. I last saw DDE selling at abt $8XX

I see thanks for the heads up :) any comments on third party 24-70?

There is only one 3rd party 24-70. Which is the Sigma. And it comes in several flavors. HSM, EX DG non-HSM, and the macro designated version.

What comments are you looking for, for these lenses?

BTW, someone did some test shots of Sigma 24-70/2.8 HSM and Tamron 28-75/2.8 here

Such as perhaps the af speed? And if the bokeh and iq are good for the Lens of that price range

If you look at the link I posted above, you would be able to get answers to these same questions.

Fudgecakes,

Actually I am having the same situation as you, deciding which of these 2 lens to buy as I am holding a DX cam.
For me, I have decide to get 24-70mm as I know what I am using it to shoot for and may have the decision to upgrade to FX cam in future without again need to sell away DX lens to get FX lens. No doubt I will sacrifice the wide angle focal length but there is no perfection for having a fast lens but without the need of changing the lens for wide angle. Unless you opt for the kit lens like 18-105mm or 18-200mm.

You mention that you will be taking alot of CCA events, maybe some portrait shots. I think wide-angle focal length is not your main consideration now. I can see that you are still young and studying. If your passion of photography is still strong, who know you may upgrade to FX cam in future when you are the spending power. By then 24-70mm has become a great investment asset to you.

Hope this helps you on making a decision as I just made mine. :bsmilie:

In my POV, I will still get 17-55mm because for FX body is to be afforable may take about 4yrs more. Furthermore I am more keen into landscape and travelling.

Actually I disagree. Using wide angle to shoot group activities will add to the sense of dynamics and action to the shots. Have to move in close.

Fudgecakes,

I just learnt that 17-55mm is selling $2400.

I think you better buy 24-70mm...
