What about the wide end that I also use alot of?

10-24 or 12-24 DX lenses are options for wide end if you do not need F2.8.

24-120 F4 at $1.6K may be an alternative to your 2 choices if you do not need F2.8

well i could say is

17-55 If you have a DX Camera
24-70 for a Full frame

Rental the lens for 1 weekend and try it out first is what i say lol

Hey Fudgecakes, me again.

IMHO, when choosing a lens, the most impt of all is you have to first know the focal range you most commonly use,
or know you will use.

It is only then that photogs will choose which lens will get them a better IQ, faster aperture or focusing characteristics within that focal range.
It is the freedom that allows them to choose the lens, what specific range to use for which purpose and then deliver the images they want.
Those are the advantages of a dslr.

If you change lens too often, or dislike changing lens. I think lenses that covers a larger focal range will suit you better, such as the
18-105 or 18-200 with a flash to allow a faster shutter speed. For hobbyists and casual shooters, the IQ should be more than
acceptable.

Cheers~

Not sure if this threads is ok, I am asking where to get the cover for 24-70lens, its like a camo cover when the lens is being wrapped when still being mounted

You mean gaffer tape?? Some shops in sg do sell. Maybe can check the marketplace? ^^ alternatively you can go to www.linkdelight.com they sell something along the lines of that too but I'm not too sure. They have a variety of stuff u can't get anywhere else like battery grip for d5k. However they do have a bad reputation of not refunding or replacing faulty items and takes quite some time to ship. Quality is ok and prices are cheap though

No.. not gaffer tape. It's like a neoprene material wrapped.

You need it for wildlife photog? Cuz I read that you can just put a plastic bag on your lens and tape camo duct tape over it. And it is unlikely to move if taped tightly enough.

No, it basically for protection

Oh thn actually gaffer tape will do. Or a camo gaffer tape. Ppl say that since nikon lenses are black there is no real need to camo it anyway. U can buy fluorescent tapes too if I'm not wrong :D

Hi all you seniors out there. I need a fast Zoom lens and after much research I have narrowed down my choices to two lenses,
The nikon 24-70mm f2.8 or the dx 17-55mm f 2.8

I have read many reviews and forum threads out there bur I still remain indecisive as both of them match my criteria. I like to shoot scenery and event photos, both indoors and outdoors occationally sports during my cca and school functions and experimenting with bokeh and aperture settings but my kit lens is just not fast enough sometimes.

I don't think that I will be going ff anytime soon. Reviews all say that the 24-70 is a better lens with a better IQ and on my crop sensor would translate to about 35-105(?)mm which is a focal range that I use alot of, especially at my cca events. I already have a 55-200mm vr but it always a bother having to switch lenses and then by the time I'm done the moment is gone. However, it also sacrifices the slight wide angle of the 17-55mm which I also use quite alot. some forums also talk about how the 24-70mm can better hold on to their "market value" than the 17-55mm(correct me if I'm wrong) not that it will matter since I'll probably use it till either I or the lens decide to wave the white flag.

Weight really isnt an issue cuz I'm already used to lugging around 16kg of stuff on 2d1n 30km hikes so the 150g diff in weight doesn't really affect me. As for cost, not to worry my senior CSers I am not taking money from my parents. I have been saving up for the lens for quite some time now so it do nor want to have to make the wrong choice thn regret later.

It's maddening, this choice of lenses but I'll be eternally greatful if you seniors may input your suggestions and perhaps experiences to help me make a more "informed" choice. :D after all I learnt
More from CS in 2 weeks then from google in2 months.

Many ppl say the 17-55mm is too expensive for a DX lens...unless it is a FX lens. Another option is to go for 16-85mm if f/2.8 is not a must.

Haha the reason why I chose this two lenses is because of the f2.8
