$20k for photoshoot? Rip off?

Commercial DI rates, not photo processing, are easily over $300/hr, so 40hrs could be $12k!..lol:)
no lah, for the kind of image to be produced (as seen from sample) no need the $300/hr treatment lah... straightforward commercial portraiture about $50/hr can already... complex compositing and other kinds of magic then need the $300/hr treatment...don't scare TS... :)

It is my view that you do NOT need a model release in Singapore. If you try to sell it to US based sites, they may ask you for it (so as to comply with THEIR specific US laws, which are NOT applicable in Singapore).
if the model or talent is from an agency, then you would need the release or the agency will not release the model or talent to you... for BYO talent, then depends on your agreement with them...:)

It is just a matter of contract then, not by operation of law. Besides, a model release is to the advantage of the photographer, not the modeling agency.

yeah, I guess in Singapore is more of a contractual thing... it's an advantage to the agency and model in the financial sense I guess in that they are compensated for their work according to the contractual agreement and any breach from that contract can then be persued in court since I don't know if there is any ground for them to stand on otherwise in Singapore law... but as a basis for good ethical dealings, its good to have contracts even with freelance talents... :)

I really enjoyed reading this tread....

very interesting to identify who knows the business, who pretends to know the business, who dont know the business at all and whos simply just begging for the business.

after looking at your examples of your photos you showed can be easily purchased off getty (or getty's empire of takeovers). Why not ? since you already find them in a stock... why not just buy from stock if the company (seemed) unwilling to pay that kind of price? and at such rate, even local premium studio may not even take it up. least talk about American or Milan or Paris. The act of pressing the shutter is not expensive, knowing where and how to press is.

An example of a Local quote for a property developer from 4 premium studio to do 1 photo of a singapore skyline with a model couple chilling in the apartment. it end bill comes to about 25K the quotes do not differ more then 2k. but i am talking premium studios of cos....;)

if its some specific message you need to deliver thru your photo, then i guess you have to advise your boss about reaching deep into his pocket. Web marketing is unlike haydays. its a multimillion business on the wire.... if your business is Web dependent then maybe is good to advise your boss accurately.

Spending 20k a month on salary may not even bring in revenue close to what you pay for web site development one time. but well.. thinking again ... maybe you shouldnt do it well or if the web site takes off and your company goes fully online... many among the 20k payroll may be out of a job... :bsmilie:

Art is when a message gets a medium... in this case photography is the medium. Be it CS photogs, free photogs or premium photogs.... the end result... is the message delivered like Art? or trash? Advertising this days is about influencing the consumer at an subconsicous level. when your company understand what they are purchasing.... then maybe price is not a matter after all.... (wonder why some ad jingles never got out of our mind since we were a kid? and now we know why our cigarettes boxes are printed with gore porn)

TS did mentioned that "My boss did his own research and told them some J studio? charge only a fraction with full rights".

This looks like another case of "Brand Consultants" trying to over price themself again. Happens all the time. Once I quoted a "Brand Consultant" $2K for a one day job. They quoted the client $12K, just for the photo shoot, model, DI and Art Direction not included. We lost the job. My friend got the job when the client went directly to him and he quoted them $2.5K. That how I come to know what the "Brand Consultant" quoted, my friend rent my digital back for the shoot.

Hi there Chrisiang

Just came across your ad! Are you still looking for a photographer? I went through your refs and i can shoot that in my sleep! Have a look at my site! Ill be in Singapore for the next 2 weeks.

Cheers

Base on the pictures you have provided here, many of us can shoot it. Cost of the shoot with full release can be as low as $1000/-, model not included and I don't think much DI is needed. Been there done that.

19K seems like a more reasonable price.
