After much media hype Michael Schumacher has announced that he will not be returning to the sport to replace the injured Felipe Massa in Valencia as hoped due to his ongoing neck injury.
"Yesterday evening, I had to inform Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo and Team Principal Stefano Domenicali that unfortunately I'm not able to step in for Felipe,” Schumacher stated on his personal website. “I really tried everything to make that temporary comeback possible, however, much to my regret it didn't work out.
“Unfortunately we did not manage to get a grip on the pain in the neck which occurred after the private F1-day in Mugello, even if medically or therapeutically we tried everything possible.

Schumacher had been expected to test the F2007 again this week ahead of making the final decision in conjunction with his doctors regarding his return.
With Schumacher now out of the running, the team will be busy trying to find a suitable replacement and may be forced to field test and reserve driver Marc Gene.

Yes, it's me, and I'm back 
I know many people are just waiting to see what I'm going to say about this year.
First off, I'd like to say that what I predicted in last year's thread came true.
As I had predicted, 2008 was and WILL be the ONLY year F1 really made the biggest bang in Singapore's history.
Look at the state of it now.
I also predicted(in the 2008 thread) that SGP will surely increase prices and cut cost this year, and I was right on both counts too.
Those who volunteered in 2008 were the truly lucky ones in every sense of the word.
It will all be downhill from now on.
Just look at the difference between the 2008 thread and the 2009 thread. At this time last year, the same thread was already red hot with more than 20,000 views. Look at the pathetic state of this 2009 thread, how many views only, compared to the 2008 thread?
They have made changes to the track and also the timing of the event. Those who are doing it this year will know what I'm talking about.
In addition, I find it absolutely ridiculous that in this time of depressed economic climate where everyone is losing jobs and in some cases, suffering financial losses like nobody's business(maybe some of you have already lost their jobs as I speak!), that not only do they not try to have a little more heart this year, and maybe make it up a little more for the volunteer's time (btw, they are PAYING ITE students 'volunteering' for 2009 F1...yeah, the irony...), but they EXPECT the NON-PAID volunteers to LITERALLY 'go the extra mile', all the WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY up north. My question to SGP is this: Hello, are you going to pay us the $50 to make a passport? Hello SGP......there is a bloody recession going on lah,....can you at least spare a thought for the volunteers or not?
This year is going to be a pale shadow of 2008. To put it succinctly, I know it is going to suck at all levels. Those who were fooled by the Schumi stunt and have just thrown in big money, you have my sympathies.
As the saying goes -

Singapore & F1 are really not meant to be - F1 is marketed as a premium sport. Once singaporeans try something once, they won't try it again. Too expensive for most singaporeans.
Look at Shanghai, they are considering quiting the F1 hosting. Annually, they are loosing money by hosting the race.
Plus the measures that Singapore imposes on hotels is madness. Last year clients had to book minimum 5 days during the Singapore F1 period. This year they reduced it to 4 days. Most people visiting a race only fly in on a Saturday in time for Qualifying, stay overnight and attend the Sunday race and fly off when the race is over. Why impose a minimum stay just to ensure you rip off enough from others?
Totally agree on the part where the ticket prices were raised. We're in a economic downturn, and they claim to have given discounts compared to last year prices by giving early bird prices. However, in terms of promotional activities, the organisers havent done much. No demonstration runs like last year, not much interesting efforts done to make F1 more affordable.
Coming from a part of Asia where salaries are on average around 2-3k a month, how do the organisers expect locals to take up tickets that are worth almost half a month's pay? And why would foreigners come again? There's Abu Dhabi this year. Time for organisers to do a reality check.

now must pay those ITE volunteers... so operating costs increased. if my operating costs increase but my income is constant, it means my profit becomes lesser. so, definitely people want to make profits out of everything they do. they squeeze the hotels and the hotels in turn squeeze the tourists. it's a vicious domino effect...

and there is so little hype around town over it. The F1 is like passing thru a ghost town.
Mate,
The city centre from Fort Canning to Marina Bay was completely abuzz with activities as a result of the F1 weekend!
We had so many stars from the racing, fashion, music, entertainment and social scenes in Singapore on the same weekend, not to mention the tourist influx.
Never seen that before and I hope we can pull off more of the same next year!

Yes, quite a few negative comments in the local press about the F1 concert around organisation. I think & I hope we will get used to the nature of such concerts. There were certainly teething problems but I don't think it was different from made-for-TV park concerts in other countries apart from the high humidity.
The F1 concert is an open-air park concert at Fort Canning, unlike the airconditioned ones with proper flooring and seats. It will get sweaty, hot (esp in SG) and muddy, something concert goers were surprised and unprepared for.
The other thing is that the concert was made-for-TV, which meant the whole show is broken up into segments and sold off as concert packages to other countries. This is very new to Singapore and it is certainly new to the concert goers. The long breaks in between performances can be upsetting to concert goers.
The local newspapers caught on the negatives but the radio stations gave high marks for the concerts.
I personally hated the high humidity that made me really uncomfortable but I do accept the nature of the F1 Rocks concert. Once the concert got going and I am caught up in the performances, nothing else matters.
To see Beyonce, Black Eye Peas, ZZ Top, Gwen Stefani, Simple Minds, A-Mei, Jacky Cheung and others in Singapore on the same stage on the same weekend is simply mind blowing.

Btw those videos are the "highlights" clips they were airing at the circuit park! I like the music for Malaysian, Chinese and British GP! They were blasting the music on the trackside speakers when there were no cars on track, i.e. in between different sessions.
