Was going through the postings in this thread and what can be concluded is more of a contention between old (1Ds) and new(5D) technology.
But let us not forget that many of those who owned older DSLR such as the ID, 1Ds, 10D, D30, D60, etc have already produced so many good pictures and for the working pro-photographers, they've been making quite a lot of money with their tools. These so-called older technologies are proven as standards acceptable by the users and their clients long before new technologies are available in the market.
If you are into the technological race, by all means get the 5D for its new technologies and the FF advantage (for the sake of getting pictures in original 35mm capability). But if you happen to be walking on the path to serious photography and wanting to have the best of breed design from Canon, the 1 series is honestly the best option - especially since the 1D and the 1Ds have reach such rock-bottom pricepoint in the 2nd hand market.
For me, I am maxing out the 1DS and the 1D that I have. I am praying hard that they would last me long enough to make enough to upgrade to the 1DS MkII eventually but no hurry as my clients hardly notice the different in the final artwork deliver to them - whether is my old faithful 10D or my 4th hand purchased 1D or 2nd 1DS MkI1.
Cheers.
