Decision made, not upgrading now, no point. Wait for the next generation. The 5D is very temption, but other than FF, does not offer anything I need when compare to my 20D. well, this is now, but when the virus strikes, who knows what I am going to do.

ok maybe i shouldnt have used the word crappy to describe FF. but i am a sucker for built-in crop factors..since more of a tele shooter than wde shooter here.

but given a choice if i have to take a FF body, i will take the old 1dsmk1 for the build quality and ergonomics.

1Ds mk I compared to 5D :

1) 45 focusing points
2) 100% viewfinder coverage
3) weather-sealed body

You forget the shutter lag/mirror black out times.

57/87 ms versus 75/145 ms.

11.4 versus 12.7 MP is not significant IMO.

Everything else, I'd expect the 5D to be the superior camera because of the later generation electronics and processor.

Handled a 1Ds for one "shoot".

Hated it! Damn bloody heavy when coupled with a 2.8 lens! If I need to put this monster on a tripod, I might as well use my 4x5! Afterall, I do not photograph sports or running animals.

You're not wrong. I wished all professional cameras with a standard zoom weigh like an Oly E-1. The 1Ds is unemployable as a 'walk-about' camera unless you're very stoic.

I was contemplating buying another 1Ds after a previous one I returned because of a scratch found on the sensor (lowpass filter), but decided to wait for a 5D.

I'm glad I did.

If nothing else, my preference is for a 5D user interface... which I think is easier to use than the 1Ds ... which takes some getting used to.

1Ds are nice to handle.. .but heavy and bulky. So it depends on your shooting style.

Now CP have drop the price of 5D $5700 & below...forget about the 1Ds...old technology and noisy pic...CCD right? Even Sony have start to use CMOS sensor (23mm x 15mm) at their 10 mega pixel cam at $1600 only...
