I wun say that FF is more demanding (other than the fact lens have to performance very well at the border in order to avoid softness around the corner), i would rather say that it is the 22MP which is more demanding...

Exactly, the details this level of sensor can capture will magnified flaws on the lens design.

Also to add my comment on Sigma by C J Goh, that was quite a surprise the amount of OT that generated. I was one that was once victim of some senseless flaming. But I think C J Goh may had taken it a bit too personally. The comment on Sigma are rationale and objective, and by no means pompous, or elitist.

Canon L lens don't get the price tag and support from such wide consumer without it's quality, and so does Sigma. But sigma is like a very good Honda (Proton is too much of an extreme), while Canon L is a Lexus. Bear in mind there are some pretty lousy Lexus along their line-ups, and so does L lens. Measure by quality/price ratio, Sigma is probably going to win, so does Honda. But there is a market for Canon L, and there is a market for Lexus.

Thanks for all your replies regarding my question. However, I can't help but note how people in here are so snobbish...

What ever happened to "Doesn't really matter what one uses, quality of a photograph comes from the photographer's eyes." ??

What happened to "be sensitive to others" as someone once told me in here?
How did you manage to come to these conclusions?
I think you still didn't get what we were all saying ................

If you have written this instead, then probably there wouldn't be any "insensitive" replies ...

"Curiously, how much am I looking at if I were to acquire this Canon 40D with all the following lenses by SIGMA?

> 10 - 20mm
> 18 - 200mm
> 20mm
> 15mm fisheye
> 50mm
> 105mm
> 70-300mm
> 170-500mm

Would appreciate an estimate including a dedicated Canon flash... "

and why not a dedicated Sigma flash unit?

:bsmilie::sweatsm:
it's like buying a top end BMW and put in cheap taiwanese sport rims and tyres ....

but there are ppl who buy top end sport rims and tyres on cheap Protons ..., which is like buying the ef200mm f1.8L with a 400D body ....

Wah then if we put a Leica lens on a Canon or Nikon Pro body?.. hmm can i call it like Rolls Royce on a ferrari?

Or like buying a $30,000 home theater system, only to play pirated DVDs of cinema dubs? :bsmilie:

If the 1Dsmk3 comes liao, do you guys thing I could an used set 1Dsmk2 @ S$5000? :dunno:

probably not. used 1Ds is still fetching northwards of $3000 here in CS.

There's nothing wrong with buying Sigma lenses... many years ago I started out with Vivitar and Sigma lenses over the big-name brands as well, due to budget constraints. However, I learnt my lesson and soon understood why some old photographers asked me to "do things right the first time round".

The third-party lenses are good and sharp, and there's no doubt about that. The problem was that the construction wasn't as sturdy. My friend's Tamron lens barrel came apart by itself without abuse, and another friend's Sigma lens elements became de-laminated after two years. I did not have issues with mechanical issues, but my lenses could not be used with the later bodies, giving "Err" codes being displayed when mounted.

When you think of the poor resale values, possible mechanical issues and incompatibility with future bodies, third-party lenses are not much of a bargain. I use mostly original brand lenses now, but I will still consider third-party lenses for more "exotic" purposes (such as fish-eye) where I will not be using it frequently to justify buying the original. I'm sure optically third-party lenses do very well, but the other aspects just put me off buying third-party.

I cannot agree with you more.

When I started out, I had a Canon FL35mm f3.5, a FD135 f2.8, and a phalanx of third party lenses, Vivitars, Tamrons, Tokinas, Kirons, no Sigma though. I still have and occasionally use the 35 and the 135 when I play around with my AE1. The third party lenses, I don't even know where they are nowaday, probably in a box at somewhere in my house. Please dont ask me to find them

Of course, the third party lens purchases, at the time, was totally justified becasue of budget contraints. However, I did not go and get a pro body F1 for my third party lenses either. Budget contraints again.

What is puzzling is Mr. Goh's plan to get a pro body and pair it with ... well, inferior lenses. There are some very good third party lenses, but, by and large, they are inferior.

If I had the 1Ds Mark III.... I'll never go back to my 'lousy' 5D.... kekekekekeke!
