1D Mk IV as a portrait camera?

Finally someone who understands what I am driving at. Those who feel that one shot one kill is the best way to take portraits, nothing wrong with it. Just accept that there are others who may need assist from faster frame rates.

But my 580EXII cannot keep up. I get alot of black frames.

Then again if you believe that 10 fps will get you the moment then you probably think that throwing money at equipment will make you a better photographer.

Nothing wrong with this thought process. The same photographer with a better tool has more room.

I think the question asked in this thread is taken out of context. Let's not be narrow minded. Having 10 fps does not mean that u must use 10 fps all the time. The are times when one shot is sufficient. It is for those times when the 10 fps have advantage. The price of 1D4 has also come down considerably with the avail of 1DX so it is also not about buying more expensive gears.

In any case, I have put off the idea for the time being as I hv read the colours and low light AF performance is inferior to 1D3. Also from a financial standpoint, the cost of owning both 5D2 and 1D4 is close to 1DX. Maybe the latter may be the better option. But I am not sure about 1DX as a portrait camera since someone has not heard of 10fps for portraits so 14fps must be highly suspicious. I hope I quoted the specs sheet correctly cos copy and paste is pure maths nowadays :-)

not about buying expensive gears? then stick to your 5D2 and stop complaining.

and you could 'copy and paste' an 18MP 1D4 that can also cost $3.5K. i take my hat off to you.

when did I ever complain about the 5D2? I am just exploring my options in 1D4.

If u hv nothing better to contribute than to nit-pick on these, maybe you can focus on other threads.

And fyi, I hv seen at least 2 1D4 at that price in BnS. Just search the history.

I used to own a 1D3 but I use it as a general walkaround camera. Sometimes I do use it fr portraits as the 1D3 is my only camera body.

I hardly use 10fps on my 1D3, but having a 1D body does offer some advantages. In comparison to my experience with a 40D (in which I traded for a 1D3):
- 1D3 is much faster in acquiring AF lock. Even a 85L focus faster on a 1D3 than on a 40D
- much wider spread of AF points, I can easily assign an AF point to my subject's eyes. This is critical when focus-recompose is not possible
- better ergonomics, easy to change settings on the fly

Let's not limit ourselves to the burst rate; fps is just one of the advantages on a 1D body. TS you might want to consider a used 1D3 body if you don't mind 10MP and lack of video option... Nowadays used 1D3s are going for less than $2k.

MWP, after processing some shots on both cams, one thing I noticed is that the bokeh on the 1D4 loses out to the 5D3 because of the crop. Even when I'm using the 50L on the 1D4 vs the 70-200II on the 5D3, the bokeh on the later is just better. Of course its not the same lenses, but the difference is noticeable. Guess you'll have to keep that in mind.

Noted and thanks for this info. I didn't know that the bokeh on FF and APS-H can be that big a difference so this is indeed an impt piece of info.
