It's all about a need for speed.

I'm real lucky to have a supportive father for photography, but I do wish that that canon might sell it for less, seeing as I'm going to cough up quite abit to help pay for it. But it it really worthwhile to get the 1D Mk3 now? What if the 1Ds MK3 comes out! Then I'll be really sad!

Also, if the 1D Mk3 is so efficient with f/4 lens, is it advicable to get 24-105 f/4 with it? I'm getting tired of lugging around my 24-70 f2.8 everytime I cover an event in school, not to mention the tele and wideangle.

yes... i can imagine...

me - "Dear, can I have the funds to buy the new 1Dmk3?"
wife - "WHY?" (twiddling the rolling pin menacingly..)
me - "Erm... becos boy-boy is running a lot faster now?"
wife - "..." (rolling pin points towards the couch)

Well, I don't really have that much to spare, but I do have a substantial amount salted away. However, whats the word on it's impending release? Soon? or far far away in the future?

We would not know :dunno: But as of now, the 1Ds MkII has no rival from other brands. I doubt it will be in a hurry to launch a replacement model so soon. A more realistic prediction is that Canon may launch a 40D soon (september is my guess) as it is where it being hit the hardest by Nikon. I do hope is something worth an upgrade from 30D.

Oh darn. I think I would have to pool my resources with my father to persuade my mother to allow us to get the 1D Mk 3 when new stock arrives then ;)

Well, do you really have to get a 1DmkIII?

I assume, by your equipment, that you should be around in digital photography for quite awhile; you should know by now that waiting for upgrades is endless. If you really need the 1DmkIII now, then get it now.

You must also realise that the 1D and 1Ds series are entirely different. One has so much speed you can't catch up, and sports a 1.3x crop sensor; the other throws out huge, high-res, high quality FF shots.

You are really blessed to have a very supportive father, but knowing the difference between wants and needs are important. Our parents all work hard to earn that money, and spending on something you don't actually need is just so wrong.

Be a good boy and listen to your uncle's advice

I'll be direct here: dun waste your parent's hard earned money. :thumbsd:

So your "nephew" must be very very young...got strength to hold 1D Mk3 anot?

I'm not related to vector1. Hahaha. You ask him la. Either way, I believe a 20D is a very capable camera. No 1DmkIII needed.

1DM3 currently is the only camera that as high sensitive AF point for lens with aperture F4 or bigger. The current 1D only works with lens F2.8 or bigger.

Canon white paper mentioned lah! :bsmilie:
I think you guys misread the 1D Mk III whitepaper. The 1D MkIII is the same as any of the 1D series camera in that only its centre AF point is cross-type with f4 and faster lenses. The centre AF point of the 1D was already cross-type with f4 and faster lenses. In fact, the 1V and EOS 3 (with similar 45 pt area AF) may already have similar f4 centre cross-type AF, but I can't verify that now.

The thing that is new on the 1D Mk III is 19 cross-type sensors (f2.8 or faster) spread out among the 45 Area AF points, as compared to only 7 cross-type sensors clustered in the centre in earlier 1D series cameras.

So ideally you would still want to use f2.8 or faster lenses to maximize the AF performance of this monster. :)

Indeed, and I fully agree. Only exception is unless you are shooting fast action such as sports, that is where the 1 series is king.

that's wat I tot so too.

So far IIRC only Nikon AF cross sensor are sensitive @ f5.6.
