18-200mm is a good choice though I might opt to go for a 3rd party lens like Sigma 18-250mm, price difference and IQ not much. ;)

but note that some members claim the focus speed is slower then canon...

Get the newer Sigma 18-250mm OS w/HSM...fast and silent motor-drive....the HSM is comparable with Canon USM...

Is HSM truly comparable to USM in terms of speed? I know that even for USM lenses, not all USM lenses are necessarily faster than micro-motor lenses, just quieter.

I agree to that.. :)

I have seen the quality of Sigma vs Canon. Canon has better quality at wide open. Not much difference at F8. Not sure if Sigma HSM is really HS.

And not forgetting in future, you can get rid of the Canon lens @ the B&S section easier :)

is there chance of 3rd party lens not gonna fit in future canon bodies?

Yes, main thing about 3rd party lenses need re-chip to made them work on newer bodies, esp sigma.....
Worth getting Canon. unless the specific lens is not available or crap!

I had the 18-200 IS, a very good lens.
Now I use a used & inexpensive 28-300 Tamron. not as good, but good enough for what I use. Shoot my son's rugby games.
n fact someone is selling a canon 28-200 lens for $350 in B&S now.

For me, I reckon a 10-22 + 28-300 lens combo works for me in travel and casual shoots. Oh yeah got many manual fast lenses as well!

what's the difference between sigma 18-200mm DC OS and without OS?

The difference lies in "Optical Stabilizer". Similar to Canon "Image Stabilizer". ;)

thanks for all the advice.. will try out the 18-200mm soon...
