18-105 vs tammy 17-50?

I have the 18-105 and Tamron 28-75 F2.8(no VC for this lens model). I carry them around as my all round walkabout lens. 18-105 good for outdoors, some wide with mid-range zoom. The Tamron I used for indoor or low light situations. IQ wise both are ok with me, I'm not really a pixel-peeper. I can shoot with the Tamron at 1/30s without noticeble camera shake. It takes practice but once you know the technique, its not all that hard. Anything slower than that then have to use a tripod. So far I dont use one as exposure at 1/30s is ok for me, depending on the light available.

If you wanna go for the VC 17-50 I say go ahead. My Tamron has always produce sharp images though the AF can be a bit 'fussy'. But I recommend keeping the 18-105. You never know when you can use it. Since it came with your D7k, just put it somewhere. The lens has VR so actually you can shoot at slow shutter speeds, therefore getting better exposures.

Anyway, thats my 2-cents worth. Cheers! :)

Well, i don't have the means to keep it so its either one or the other. If i want the tammy then i've got to sell the nikkor

Mainly cos of constant f2.8. and the fact that so many are raving about its iq. But 18-105 iq also not bad as well.

My primary concern now is the autofocus and me budget ;p

I still have reservations about Tammy's autofocus. Primarily the non vc version. Heard the vc's autofocus is better but not sure how well it performs when stacked up against my 18-105

No problem with AF for the tamron 17-50.. if any doubt can just rent one to try.... the AF speed is very fast..

I use 17-50 non VC
I love it!
Autofocus is a prob during low light condition, but im not complaining =)

erm, pardon my ignorance but wads bim?

Mine's a d7000. so it'll be under enthusiast? but they seem to have made d7000 more semi pro leh?

Bim = built in motor. Meaning the lens af is driven by a focus motor inside the lens.

So far I heard the d300/d300s still focuses faster than d7000 when using the in body screw drive motor.

But the fastest I saw is the D3s. So
Fast it zips.

The best version is the non-bim version. It is the version without a focus motor inside the lens. Near impossible to find new now. But seen a few copies floating around in bns.

When I first got the lens (bim non-vc) I can definitely see the difference in IQ when compared to my old 18-55ED2

The Tamron 17-50/2.8 is suppose to be better than the kit lens in low light condition due to bigger maximum aperture but AF is a problem at this condition.

Quite a number these days, which sort of caught my attention ;p

Just bought a 17-50 (non vc) to pair up with my D90, so far so good.
Went for the non vc because of price ($200-300 less than the vc version) as well as size (lighter than the vc). AF is fast enough for me.
The 17-50 is now my walk-about lens, good for low-light photography as well. In fact, it may even replace my 50mm f1.4, which is being neglected and maybe it's time to sell.

Very nice :D glad you're enjoying it

from what i have been reading, its not easy to get a good copy.

do they calibrate their lens locally in SG or have to send to Japan?

actually, the first copy I tried is a good copy. Not sure about you, but I call that "easy"

From what i know, if you send for back focusing problem. They will try change the firmware locally. If still not solve, then they will send to Japan for calibration.

I got my copy of VC version from HK at 200-300 cheaper than in Singapore so the price is roughly the same as non-VC. To me, i'm not sure whether is a good or bad copy but i feel is good enough for me. Can't complain much also because i ask my friend to get it for me but if there is any problem, you can send for repair in SG provided is Internation Warranty.
