If you have the $$$ to buy 580EXII, you should be able to afford 17-55mm :P

Lame joke aside: I have been thinking of similar stuff so I thought of a solution.
Buy a 17-50mm Tamron for my DSLR and continue using my Canon S5 IS for long range shooting. (S5 does not worth much $$$ if I were to GS it, oh well :( )
(My DSLR will cover 27mm to 80mm while my S5 IS covers 36mm to 648mm with or without 1.5X teleconverter)

I am also a lazy person, I am against the idea of keep chaning lens.

Thanks for pointing out on the flash auto zoom motor on tamron lens, I will take note of it when purchasing my copy. :)

Changing lens gets easier and more intuitive with more practise, really.

Also, with proper planning and anticipation based on the type of event, you can also reduces the need to keep changing lens. Also, we are talking about swapping only two lenses here.

Went to the drift event today..Man I now totally understand why people buy the 18-200mm haha..Especially since it started raining halfway through the event!

But this is just a single event, so I might consider getting the Tamron 17-50mm still. Though I don't really know how to test for the infamous back and front focusing issue.

That's why I mentioned it is lame. lolx

TripleOne:
Actually, I am seriously thinking of this:
If you are getting a DSLR with Canon 18-200 IS, or Sigma 18-250mm OS, or tamron 18-270mm VR, You must well settle down on a Cheaper Canon SX10 IS or SX1 IS?

Cos I believe SX10 IS can SX1 IS can produce similar images as what the above combo can do, less Zoom blur effect. Those super-zoom lens optics are not superior due to their zoom range. They aren't wonderful night performer as well. Doesn't it make what a Canon SX10 IS or Canon SX1 IS can do? Taking about zoom, comparing a 500D with Tamron 18-270 and a Canon SX1 IS, even the canon SX1 IS has a longer focal length of 28mm-560mm compared to 28 - 432mm. And these superzoom are lighter too. :)

A dslr with a superzoom lens has the edge in speed (AF, shutter lag) and noise control over a prosumer cam

Search / Google for "Focus test chart". It's all well-explained there.
