How narrow can u go?

depends on your style of shooting. if U're afraid of getting beaten up, get a 200mm at least.
Else a mid-zoom will do.

Or get a fast 85mm f/1.8, light, but less flexible.

OT: Why am I posting so many posts?
Coz can upz my post count. ;p

.

I must say, "thank you all for the valuable advice". Thank you.

After reading, chatting and seeing so much, I think this is a great hobby! We can never go back in time and therefore, its important to keep such beautiful or not so beautiful memories in our trusted cameras and hard disk!!!

Think it will go beyond my holiday. So afterall, 5D is still a possibility! Let see if the Sin and HK market will surge further next 2 weeks.....another 5 - 10% would make this investment an easier one :)

Don't know if I am right, but the FF do make sense moving forward. For now only getting one lens and no flash (as some bros have pointed out that it not necessary - hence save some monies and 340g!) Tripod, think a small will be great - any recommendation?

By the way, think CP is quite ex, you guys have other recommendation and the price some have mentioned, does it includes GST and can use VISA?

Hey, thanks for all the valuable advice!...just finish watching the liverpool-chelsea game and feeling really wonderful!!!!...to all the liverpool fans and the non-chelsea fan.....

Cheers.....

places like AP and mscolor do quote with gst.. as for visa they might not want to bear the extra charges for you.. have to check it out with them :)

Add up the weight of 5D(895g), 24-105(670g), portable hard disk(200g), camera bag(400g)-try walking around with this weight. See if u prefer 350d(540g),kit lens(184g) instead for a weight saving of 1210g. Not to mention extra batterys, filter, water bottle, guide book etc.

One thing to note: the 5D does not have a pop up flash, unlike 30D. So if you get the 5D without an external flash, you'll find yourself without the use of flash during your tour. You may need some fill in flash when taking pics of your family.

I wouldn't say that almost all churches will prevent you from using tripod or flash. It is usually the big popular tourist attraction churches that are more vigilant against the use of flash and tripod. They usually will put out signs outside to tell you if they don't allow tripod and flash. For eg, I have taken pics of the Notre Dame in Paris with tripod and flash on 2 occassion and I wasn't stopped. But I was stopped by an attendant at the Dom in Cologne. In the Lourve museum, even though they explicitly prohibit the use of flash, but you'll still see lots of other tourist flashing away. I also didn't have any problem using my tripod at the Lourve, but I only use them at less crowded areas.

If you visit those less touristy small churches, I don't think you will have any problem with your photography. But just be a bit more mindful of the local sensitivity.

For museum, it is usually stricter. Like in the Vatican museum, they will asked you to deposit your tripod, and at certain areas state no flash photography. Some places will totally ban photography, like the Pope's palace in Avignon.

Anyway, you may still want to take some night scenery, so a tripod is definitely useful. At least a small portable tripod will do.

i would get 17-85mm + 70-200mm!

Dear All
Thanks for the advice! but still confused and undecided!!!!
Any more advice on the following will be welcome:

If I get the 24-105mm f/4L as my walk about lens, like some has advised, it is really a 'neither here nor there' lens. Hence if I need a wide angle or a tele lens, I will need to get 2 more lenses!

So just wondering if I should get the 16-35mm f/2.8L and maybe a tele lens like the 70-200mm f/4L but travelling with both lenses would really be very inconvenient as they are really heavy.

Any advice what I should get for travelling in Europe.....not to forget I will be there for month hopping from train to train and also shopping.....

Or the original idea of getting a 24-105mm f/4L is the best option after all? Anyway any idea whether the IS feature in the 24-105mm lense better than the 24-70mm f/2.8 without IS? Sorry just some ignorant question that I have in mind....

Hoping for some sincere advice... thanks

Hi, is 5D a more difficult camera to use than a 30D? Note that 5D has a lot of manual control with no scene modes (whatever that meant) and does not have AF assist - thus more difficult to focus in low light condition. Any idea if 5D will be a too difficult for me to handle? But kind of like FF....Just got a quote from AP - S$5,000 and 24-105L - S$2120.

Bro, if you not sure of anything, I would advise you to hold on your bullet.

best mode to use

My personal advise on this one...

Canon EOS 5D
EF 17-40mm f/4 ( Covers Wide end for buildings, landscapes..)
EF 50mm f/1.4 ( Covers low light situations with higher ISO's)

You could skip the Flash ( if on Budget constraint) however I feel that a tripod is essential.

Hi. do you have recommendation on a strong and light tripod?

sorry guys. Its just very confusing at this stage....something i believe you may have experienced in the past.

In fact, I could not decide if I should get 30D or 5D as 5D is a full frame camera. but then, together with these lenses, maybe too much to spend at one go. Probably the 30D would last me for at least 5 years. (hopefully)

Sounds like u have 20D. 30D is abt the same as 20D. Your camera already gd. Why dun put money in lenses instead. I dun have money to travel. If I have a choice, I would still carry two lens. One short and 1 long like what u were thinking initially.

Not sure whether true or not. A few users said that 5D is made for Raw. Their JPEG quality is not as gd. I wonder whether the menu interface sux as much as 1D Mark 2. Have u tried? In 1D Mark 2, Just to review previous image u have to press display-select 4 thumbnails - move to pic - move to single mode again. To review another image again, have to repeat the same process again. Is 5D the same?

Ya, I will be thinking hard over the next few weeks....thks. But if you do travel, you may need to give the weight a thought as it may be quite tiring to travel with some many gears. Afterall, you will also want to enjoy your holiday with your loved ones as well as taking photos!
