It's pretty odd that some people lost out on the fact that you MAY want to carry a SPARE camera... and add more weight! :bsmilie:

You missed my point completely.. Maybe it's because I wasn't too direct.. BTW, come to think of it, my answer has no leverage on whether I work in Canon or not..

Personalyl, I would invest in L lens 1st before even thinking about a 5D.. I find no point using 5D with normal lens, then might as well just continue with 350D or 30D 'cos the pictures won't look much different abit the higher resolution.. A normal cam with normal lens give you normal pics.. A normal cam with better lens give you better pics.. But a better cam with normal lens will still give you normal pics.. Then I'd rather just stick to better lens and a normal cam.. No offense, this just my personal POV..

Anyway, let's leave it at the fact that different pple got different point of view.. If not, there won't be a need for different camera brands and models :)

Erm... I think you work in Canon, after you said you work in Canon?

That's all that is to it. Even if you work in Canon, hands-on experience differs from owners's experience. A "worker's" experience is different from a photographer's experience. Unless you're a pixel peeper, or print high quality (i mean high quality) billboards, shoot commercials, in which a Canon system may not suffice - I fail to be convinced, by a worker in Canon, that 5D needs L glasses, or it would be a waste of money.

Please know that I agree with you, that 5D needs good glasses. 24-85 can have excellent results on my 20D, but becomes soft somehow, on the 5D. But I hope you refrain from making a sweeping statement that only L glasses are the ones that are suitable.

I've had my say, and sorry for digressing from the topic. :)

Yes, that's why I added another post later :) But my spare is a P&S.. Carry 2 DSLR sure leg and back cramp :)

I m using EF-s body. for me 17-40 good enough for holidays. + 50 mm & 85 mm would be perfect.
for me... weight is last consideration. :P if can take good photos, why care ?

When you cannot walk.. How to take pics? :bsmilie:

You use tripod, take indoor pic. with 24-105L f/4 at f/8.. Picture quality better than handhold a 24-70L f/2.8 at f/2.8.. so what do you think? f2.8 more impt, or tripod more impt?
care to explain this statement?

Alamak bro.. Test my England ah??

Or you trying to say that 24-105L at f/8 may not produce a better pic. than 24-70L at f/2.8?

how do u shoot indoor event pic with 24-105 at f8 and get quality same as 24-70 at f2.8

Oh.. Did he say event? Sorry, I was referring to indoor still.. Maybe I read wrongly.. Paiseh..

Brother, he say indoor pic. when on holiday leh.. he never say event, i go back and read again liao :)

BTW.. Quality very subjective.. When you shoot indoor event with 24-105L at f8, the quality of still objects will be better, only those moving ones will be worse :bsmilie:

If you get a 30D, 24-105 is not wide enough. You need something with 17mm - trust me I have done a few Europe trips and the 17 end you will need. If you have a 16-35 and a 24-105, you have a good range and I would personally drop the 70-200 idea. You can always crop the 105 end.

If you get a 5D, then a 24-105 plus a 70-200 would probably be about right.

My next trip will probably see me with a 10-22, 17-40L and a 85 1.8.

Another thing - reduce the amount of other baggage as much as possible. I only bring 4 changes of shirts and 2 pants max and I end with less than 10kg including camera gear.

Oh, thks for the advice. don't think I will buy both 16-35L and 24-105L now. I will probably get the 30D. So what do you recommend for the lens if I only get 1 for the time being. But maybe can match the 24-105L with a prime lens or maybe a 3rd party lens with a wide angle? But should such wide lens be in f/2.8 and lower? What do you recommend (a) canon prime lens or (b) 3rd party wide angle or prime lens?

Bro.. I already told you, match the 24-105L with a EF-S 10-22mm.. That's what I do when I go holidays.. Russ is right, 24mm on a 1.6x crop camera is definitely not wide enough..

Hi bro, but the 10-22mm is quite ex right. spending S$8k maybe to much at one go. any suggestion as an alternative?

just realised, its f/3.5-f/4.5. Is f2.8 necessary?

What do you think if I am going to use it for holiday and family....as a hobby...well may have to see how it goes.

Anyway, do you think getting the 24-105L is ok? my concern is it is not a f/2.8 (not sure how much it will affect my pic esp taking indoor pic in Europe) and if may need to invest in 2 more lenses!

Since you are going for a holiday with your family, you should put your family interest first and make use of this time to spend quality time with them rather than putting 100% on your shooting. (Of course if your wife and children don't mind you concentrating on your shooting) Also for a hobby, if you have deep pocket than go for the 16-35 f2.8L, if not a 17-85 IS USM is good enough for a 30D camera. Full frame DSLR need very good lenses to go with as some CSer here had already mentioned.:)

Generally a constant large aperture zoom lense has better optics, but I feel that it is not important, unless you used it very often for low light events without flash. Also if your concern is to take holiday snaps or landscape photos, you should be more concern about choosing your aperture to maximise your depth of field. Surely you are not going to shoot wide open all the time:sweat: F/3.5 is only about 2/3 stop slower than f/2.8. If you can't shoot handheld at f/3.5, you'll find that f/2.8 can't save you too much also, especially if you are shooting at night.

Anyway, at the moment, there is no f/2.8 lense in the 10-22mm range, not even the 3rd party lenses. Also a constant f/2.8 lenses are bigger and heavier. The EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 is one of the best super wide angle lense for the 30D now.

So f/3.5 ok for shooting inside the cathedral, meusum, or other indoor places of interest?

Question: When you are shooting super wide landscapes, you're going for the huge DOF. Why would you need 2.8?

For more than 10 years i was using a slr with only the 50mm lens n i have travelled to many countries. Maybe i was not so into photography then. Only now i started using zooms n wide angle n tele lens. Experiment with the different lens to see what u like. You may not want the best or the most convenient or the widest range or the heaviest or the lightest. The legendary photographer Henri Cartier Brenson only shoots with the 50mm lens. What if he sees something that needs another lens to shoot, he doesnt shoot it.
