another 24-70 from me. but.... get both if possible and also the AFS 50 1.4 when it is out!! :D

i'd get the 24-70. but like the others have suggested, if you can afford it, buy both and have all 3!!

with the 14-24, 24-70, and 70-200 (and 50f1.4) in hand... then you would still have to decide if you want to break your back carrying all of them, only to find that you would use the 24-70 80% of the time, etc. of course, this depends very much on where you're going, what you are going to shoot, and your style of shooting.

to some extent, this is where the DX range has an edge in its lens range... (note that i'm not nec commenting on optics)...

...well still think 24-120 VR does not do justice to the investment on D700, had the lens b4....so I don't think I got it....not anymore anyway hahaha.

hehehe.. i know... but i prefer to carry something lighter and wider range on vacation.. same goes for S12-24 vs. 14-24. I know the trinity lenses are the best for D700 but in terms of handle-ability... one need to make a tough choice there.

as suggested to the TS, go for 24-70. Was just offering another perspective if he is a light traveller like me.

I will go for 14-24, especially for family moments, it has got a different feel, a sense of closeness.

This is what holding me back on the 24-70. You got it righ on. ;(

I like to take really close up candids. Ones that right smack at your face kind. Something different. Have not try the 14-24 before. So I cannot too sure if it is the kind of lens that I would use. Read the ken rockwell site and the way he describe the use of UW is something I really like to practice on.

Buying both is definitly out now. Economy is bad ... need to save up.

My vote now is for the 24-70

too many going for 24 - 70, you should not follow them, else your images won't stand up, if all skill equal. Get the 14 - 24, your wives will have the WOW expression when she sees yours children photos. As for landscape, this lens is magic.

24-70 is my lazyman lens for event.

 for your suggest

but remember to tell TS not to shoot at 14mm at place family members too close and at side of frame ... otherwise really WOW ! :bsmilie:

How did you know that he has more than one wife?

But seriously, the 14-24mm is not a lens for portrait taking, especially the close-up type unless it's deliberately used to create cartoony caricature type of effect shots like this..

Taken at 14mm... you will be surprised how close the camera is to the subject to get a shot like this.

Very gimmicky and will run stale in no time. And very unflattering to the ladies. :)

Wah! You pic really

hhmm... instead of 14-24mm, anyone have any opinion on the 14mm f2.8 prime? since most people getting the 14-24 for the 14mm.

for the simple reason that ...

(1) a lot of humans like to pixel peep (they couldn't make out that black mole on their boy friends last toe) so they didn't got married

...

(2) because of (1), those humans came to a conclusion that it ain't good enuf for digi, fx, whatever

mm.... if I have a lens that goes 14-24 mm I think I will be using the 24mm portion more often....

at least I hope so.

The 14mm prime at F/2.8 has a rather severe vignetting compared to the 14-24mm at 14mm at F/2.8. Theres not much difference in price.

Its actually very fun to play with UWA. The reason why i come to Nikon:P their 14-24mm is unmatched by the C site. But now i'm waiting for an affordable FX camera from Nikon and waiting for money to fall into my hands.=.=

Anyway, I still think the 24-70mm would still be better as its more conventional(pictures produced) easier to use also.
