scag,u know i not into technical terms.thanks for enlightening me on that though;)

so, my d200 has a 1.5x crop f, wouldnt it be better to get the 85 1.4 then?which gives me 127.5mm of 35mm equivilant.?:dunno:

how's the bokehjiaktaugeh of the 85mm compared to that of the DC?

if i interpret u guys correctly, then what i understd is that the DC can adjust the background blur, and also can adjust to get "SOFT" image.am i right?

so if i shoot at f2.8, my rear defocus ring set to f5.6, i will get soft images?:dunno:

i'm speculating to get either of these.85mm, 105 or 135.

please let me know some feedback.

135f2D DC has a very long working range.

85 f1.4D and 105f2D DC might be better choice. as for the bokeh, think there's never a clear conclusion. both are jus as good.

if u shoot at f2.8 and defocus at f5.6, i'm not sure what the results will be like. i'll let u knw after this sunday.

According to the website posted above, the result is softening of the portions in focus.

Yes. It behaves like that.

I can't remember turning the defocus ring to F will cause the front to blur or the rear to blur. I didn't keep proper data, intuitively and according to the manual, turning the ring to the F will blur the front and to R will blur the rear, but I had some files with conflicting filenames, so I might have labeled them wrongly the last time.

If you turn the ring beyond the aperture you're using, you'll get a soft effect like in these images. Both shot wide open at f/2.0 and with the defocus ring turned in opposite direction to 5.6 (or maybe beyond 5.6, I can't remember.)

Goes to show that these DC lenses aren't as easy to use/master as one might think.

thanks for the pics.u mentioned both shots wide open at f2.0 with ring turn in opp direction.so what is the DIFFERENCE in settings that cause the difference in DOF or bokeh diff in the 2 pics?:dunno:

judging from the pics, man....this is one damn hard lens to use/master definitely.

anyway, lords out of stock.1 month ordering.

question:

do you have to press the DOF preview button to see the different settings on the DC ring or they are viewable throught the viewfinder?

year end mah.bonus coming.

ask u go jap dun wan, then i spend the $ lor.:bsmilie:

aiyah, i already say mah, you buy ticket, i take leave then we go lor
or i can hide in your camera bag

As long as your aperture is not fully open, you'll have to use DoF preview. :)

The defocus control ring! One pic is defocused to front, the other defocused to rear. It changes the coma correction group of optics which changes the bokeh.

will that take 'long' to compose a portraiture then?

or once u set it, u basically just leave it and fire away?

i'm trying hard to understand the term defocus.:dunno: :embrass: :what:

it won't take long.

jus adjust the rings accordingly and fire away.

Defocus is to make it more out of focus. So to defocus the rear is to make the rear more out of focus and defocus the front is to make the front more out of focus. However, interestingly, in my series of test shots, I find that the background bokeh is smoother with the defocus ring turned to the front. But the rear is obviously blurrer with the ring turned to the rear.

Here are some images, I remembered shooting more foreground when I turned the ring to F and more background when I turned the ring to R. You decide which bokeh is nicer.

At each aperture, the defocus ring is turned to the respective f-number indicated and at 0 which is no defocus. The images are in the sequence with defocus control set to front, none and rear respectively.

So it won't take long.. Once you the kind of blurness you desire, just set it permanently there and just as per normal. Another name for the lens can be "variable bokeh lens". ;)

I think Nikon did it because different people like different kind of bokeh.. some like the soft creamy type and some like the fuzzy fuzzy type. Now I hope it doesn't make you more blur. :)
