hi all,

im a newbie to dslr cameras, purchased my 1000d a month ago with tamron 17-50mm f2.8 lens, mainly to be used for self-portrait photography for my online shop. I always use a tripod when i take the pics but i have no idea y my pics are not sharp... I use the P mode, and aperture is f4.0 and shutter at 1/60 with the built in flash. My lighting is abit orangey and using some window lighting. Camera distance to me is about 1m or slightly lesser. Pls advice what did i do wrong or how to improve the sharpness. Thaankss alot in advance!!

Sis, i'm no pro but i'll share with you what i know from my experience so far..

When shooting potraits, you should try using M mode as this gives you greater flexibility in terms of controlling your exposure.. For me personally, i only use P mode to meter the ambient lighting..

Your shutter speed of 1/60 is too slow, hence abit of motion blur is apparent in your images (probably caused by either your movement, or vibration during shutter release).. Try using at least 1/125, this is the minimum you should use to freeze a frame.. As for your f-stop, you can try f5.6-f8 to get optimum sharpness for 3/4 - full body potraits.. And if you're using self-timer, use the mirror-lock function as well.. That's about all for sharpness..

If you have space, try to keep a further dist from the b/g as your shadows seem harsh (unless you don't mind that).. But since you're using window light, you might wanna look into using reflectors instead of your built-in flash as fill light.. That way, you won't get the harsh shadows.. And with rgds to your orangey lighting, check your white balance.. Try using tungsten/daylight white balance, or play ard with the built-in white balance settings to see which works best.. Or best still, shoot in RAW using AWB..

I have some experience shooting products and people in studio, so these are just my suggestions.. Feel free to post here or our other thread if you have any issues.. All the best!

Studio shoot need to spend some money to rent studio+equipment+model fees.. And we need people with real expertise to guide us from the very basics..

Studio photography/flash photography are very technical subjects.. You need to know the different types of lighting.. And positioning of lights to properly expose the subject or to bring out the various lighting effects.. Blah blah blah..

If we want to start, i suggest we start shooting outdoor potraits using available light 1st.. At least have a feel of getting proper exposure on human subjects.. For that, we just need fine weather and a couple of reflectors.. And of course, the model..

Just my suggestion.. Depends on the majority.. But if anyone wants to organise any impromptu session, why not..

I'm keen and waiting for this kinda outing. Model with the backdrop of matilda's house in punggol... If no models we can shoot William (looks like Heavenly Kings)... RocFreaks (looks like Rock star) and offcourse... Chakka with his boots and rugged look (model for Marlboro advert):thumbsup::thumbsup:
