Any suggestions what are the budget flashlite to get for beginner to stand off with?

Any idea where to get 50mm f1.8 lens?
1st hand or 2nd hand?

thank you so much =)

Sigh.. bought my canon 1000D 2 months ago and had been shooting with it together with a bunch of friends who are using Nikon cameras.

Turn out that alot of my shots turn out to be very soft/very crisp or sharp compare to my friends who are using Nikon D70 or D80. Even with flash on at night.

Do you all have any problems with it or encounter similar issues?

Having second thoughts about canon and thinking of a switch. Hope to hear some feedbacks from you guys first.

thank you and any objective feedback will be welcomed.
i want to believe in canon but my nikon friends who had been into photography for many years persuade me about the many problems about canon. Metering and focusing issues.

hmmm.. the difference can be caused by alot of things like shutter speed , lens etc. not just body/brand. maybe you can post your pics here and let the pros take a look at it? haha im not sure.

btw i got my 50mm at ms color. cheap and good! ;)

hi Qlalz! Don't be discouraged by ur dismal shootings. I can assure you everyone of us here go thru the same scenerio when we first start out on DSLR. At your stage, even if someone is going to pass you a top of the range model you will still come out with poor showings but slightly better bcos of technology. It boils down to practice and practice and practice!!! It's not a matter of which brand is better though of course your friends will say theirs is better. Just take a look at this 1000D gallery and you will find some very professional shots and many amaturish shots. Open yourself to criticsms and try to pick up and practice what you can from this forum. I myself have benefited tremendously from this forum. 1000D is touted as entry level but it doesn't mean it's no good. It's got stuff that even some better cams dun have and fairly competitive IQ. You can get a brand new 50mm F1.8 MK II from most of the reputable shops @ ard $120. You can also get many brands of 3rd party flash at fairly decent price. I've got the kit lens plus the 50mm 1.8 too! !!! I use sunpak PZ42X ex flash ( something like speedlite 430ex ) which i bought brand new from MS Color in AMK for $200. Below are some pics of my last outing in Vivocity all shot using 1000D with 50mm F1.8 II lens and without flash at all.

Hmm.. think i am still apprehensive about 1000D or even Canon cameras.
Here's what my Nikon friends say who had played both canon n nikon cameras.

Canon dSLRs have stupid ergonomics that gets in the way of how you shoot. The placement of buttons is simply not logical. A simple change of common settings will require you to take both hands off the shooting position.

Also, Canon has an obsolete metering and WB system. Their flash technology is also lagging Nikon. They are not innovating like Nikon or Panasonic. All they are doing is marketing old **** as new by using gimmicks to cover up their product deficiencies.

Here's a simple test: Use your Canon dSLR to shoot a scene with complicated lighting. Next, shoot the same scene with a Nikon dSLR. You will see that the metering on the Nikon is a lot more likely to get it right and with great consistency over multiple shots.

I have used a Canon auto focus film SLR extensively. I am not impressed by the metering and I hate the ergonomics. Even Sony dSLRs have better ergonomics. I am not paid by anyone to say anything. This is just my experience from years of handling many different SLRs and dSLRs. Shooting in VS helped a lot. They throw me different cameras all the time, so much so that I probably have handled more brands and models of SLRs than most pros have in their lifetime. Enough said. Go play with your camera and you will see what I mean.

Let's put yourself in the shoes of a pro who needs to stick your nose behind the camera the whole day...so every tiny bit of things count, from ergonomics, setting up speed, accuracy, metering, sharpness...everything plays a part in the whole shooting experience.

The way that pro shot, the Canon 1DsM2 is getting in the way of the work.
1. On-off button, located somewhere inaccessible, easy to forget to turn on/off. Meaning to say u waste battery.
2. Batt life sux, just a few shots, he ran out of batt. Need 3 batt to shoot whole day, I'll only need 1. His one batt is easily 3 times the size of mine.
3. Connection problem to laptop. He connects his camera to laptop all the time to review and store the shots. Why? His screen so small and useless, he can't see much details on it, that's why need 14 inch mac to view. Everytime face connection problem to the mac, wasting time, batt life. Can you afford these things as a pro when time is pressing?
4. Metering sucks so bad, he rather use his own judgment and shoot everything Manual in cases when you don't actually need to shoot manual! That 1DsM2 has 21 evaluation points to meter the scene, only a Pentax has less @ 16 points. Sony easily 300+, Nikon has 420 to 1005 points! Shooting manual meets adjusting 2 variables at a time, and you're wasting time doing that. He keeps complaining he don't have time to shoot everything in 2 days. From what I see, I can finish everything in 1 day with a basic D40.
5. I can't stand the shutter sound of ANY Canon DSLR. It sounds like some scissors snipping away. Nikon works on the shutter sound to perfection. U click on yours or flagship1DsM3 and click a Nikon's cheapest D40, you'll know what I'm talking about. Can u bear hearing something so irritating the whole day? It's an ear sore and probably will shorten your ear's life span or give u heart attack.

Sharpness wise, it depends also a lot on the lens you use. So far his images look ok, but colour is too bland. When shooting scene with high contrasting light, you don't get details in the dark, and the highlights are easily blown, losing precious details. You need something called active dynamic range or D-lighting in Nikon terms. Canon has image optimizer in newer cameras, but it's not a comprehensive solution compared to Nikon's proprietary D-lighting.

I think I've said enough, and you know enough theoretically what's happening to cameras of different brands and what matters when you're shooting. you probably need to try using them in different situation to see what they're capable or incapable of.

1. shots don't come out as expected
2. pple using other cameras and system are getting what they want in less time, less money, using less resources...den feel dui about it.
3. the brand comes out with something trashy in the future and you've nothing to upgrade to. Like 1DM3 or 50D that is worse in many people's opinion than a 40D.

If you have noticed, Canon has been packing more and more pixels into each successive model.
Does more resolution = better photos? 90% of the time it is a resounding NO.
Does Canon's pro grade models look like they are going to get any much better? Another big NO. Simply because they are obsessed with adding more pixels.

Well...to each his opinion. If you are not happy with your canon then just sell it and get a nikon! By right you should have done all your searches online before you make your purchase. Hell if I'm you I'll buy Nikon bcos all your friendz are using Nikon and telling how good it is...how did you end up buying Canon??? Something for your thought...you remember watching football matches on TV? Do you notice that most or almost all of the photographers by the sideline are all using cams fitted with white coloured oversized lens? Those are Canon"s ! I guess it boils down to how good the snapper is. There's even quite a bunch in CS who are still using outdated film SLRs and u will awe at their photos...my 2 cents!

Your Vivo photos impressive le, you think old man like me with a 50'ish yrs old hand can steady the EF 50mm 1.8 ? seems like an affordable lens to start and experiment with.
Im swinging by MS later to check the tripod Benro 200ex you have, and some bags on promotion. Hope I will return home with sufficient money for meals till end of the month.

Hi Shaw...prawn shot not by me lah..but if i'm not wrong you need to have a polarizing filter to take shots thru the glass to prevent reflections. I oso planning to go Sentosa and shoot but must get the filter first lah...

Hi william

Yup ! lowepro bags are on offer. Bought a Stealth Reporter 300 @ $89! MS Color located @ AMK Hub #02 almost right at the end or cross the road from AMK MRT towards the central and walk a few blocks down the right hand side . I think it's block 711 ( a octagonal shaped block by itself ) . You can also call them at 64576380. Hope this info helps.

Just got back from MS Color. The Benro Tripod sold out. Bought th 50mm f1.8 instead for $110. Those who want the bags on offer better hurry. Lots of ppl there just now. I did'nt get any bag, so little stuff i have at the moment.

hmmm i've been to outing with bunch of nikon friends too. all high ends haha. but instead of telling me how sucky my camera is, they give me tips on how to take awesome pictures. making the best of whatever i have in my hand haha.

Are they involved in some identification parade? :bsmilie::devil:

lol we got nothing else better to do that night hahah

Anyone interested in Samsonite camera bags/lens bag? my workplace got sell but i never really ask about the details.if u guys are interested tell me.:)

Bought $195 for the grip but AMK hub last piece sold to me liao. Benro tripods price quite reasonable and pretty good quality even though made in China. Try the other outlet lor ...

Bro Cakka must be havin a good time with his 50mm 1.8 hahaha!!!
