F4 is quite sharp...f2.2 is also not bad if the light is not too much diffusive.

nothing is perfect. SB900 comes with heavy, bulky and costy, although it is really good. SB 600 is good enough, if you think before shoot.

i will just bring the 16-85. usually it could fit 85% of the situations. if go with someone you love or will love, bring the 50/1.4 to entertain the love... will not bring 70-300VR and 85/1.4. too heavy unless self driving.

not a bad idea to have a 2nd hand D70, esp. as a starter. i am still happy with my D70 bought 5 years ago. i would not let it go even after my next upgrade.

use the budget of D700 to get good lens.... lens is more important than body unless unqiue shooting requirement is involved.
