I think you meant the Tokina 16-50 f2.8 (quite expensive for a newbie, and not so good), since there is no Nikkor 16-50... Tamron 17-50 or Sigma 18-50 2.8 EX Macro HSM isbetter. :)

Picasa 3's new image viewer works very well and in vista has tranparency effects, cool.... can view almost any type of image file including RAW and PSD. ;)

Since the 18-55VR is not a fast constant 2.8 zoom... it will have the tendency to hunt on low light situations, this is normal. And also, you must focus on areas of contrasting colors to get accurate AF. Focus recompose if you havto. This is not a fault of your lens. Cheers.

A photograph will be considered "high key" if there are very little or no shadows present on the entire frame. Most newbies interpret this is by over exposing the entire photo, wrong. A good high-key shot is done without blowing alot of highlights on the shot. Again, it's a photograph wherein...

Picasa 3 is now available from google. This is probably the most newbie friendly software that does just about everything everyday shooters would need. New version even has heal tool now, hehe. :)

Tamrac Pro 12 for my normal everyday photoshoots... I pack alota stuff hehe. Tamrac Expedition 6x - when I'm on a beach/outdoor assignment Samsonite Laptop Backpack Crumpler 5mil - night clubbing shoots 3 or 4 other generic camera bags from my old gear.

Excellent post Br3ndan.... The 1st photo is the best among the set. THIS IS High Key folks. I dunno what's the basis for the comment "sorry this is not even remotely high key...". Actually, this post is a very very good example of highkey, the details on the highlights is still visible. Thumbs...

The Sigma DP1 has the largest sensor of all the P&S. It's the same size as our DSLRs hehe. ;)

Agree with the horizontal orientation... I think it'll look better. :)

Lovely tones bro. And her eyes.... wow. The only thing bothering me is the background. Does'nt seem to suit her outfit/makeup. Just my thoughts... I still like it though. :)
