Since IQ is your primary consideration and you do wides, the 5D-2 is the camera to go for. The 7D's IQ is not a match for the 5D-2. The price difference bewteen the two has narrowed quite a bit so this makes the 5D-2 more appealing

Hi, the reason I asked about the aperture values is more of a practical concern. This is because for my usage, I normally would need to focus in available light indoors without flash I noticed that if the aperture is at 5.6, the lens will hunt a lot when trying to focus in dimmer conditions so...

thanks .. looks like this lens dims to f5 at 80mm and becomes f5.6 at 135mm - which is an issue for me as that would mean I would have problems focusing at the tele end

hmm .. perhaps you are using a ff high iso performer like the 5dmk2 or you shooting still objects? for me i would not be able to shoot at f8 - don't have this luxury. the 24-85 is not a sharp lens to begin with so i would not use that with a ff cam if i had one.

Ring USM is a version of USM - faster and usually found on the more expensive lenses.

actually i think the 18-135mm would be a pretty nice lens as the crop version of the previously popular 28-135 IS (during the film days). 18-200mm may suffer too much barrel distortion My main beef with the lens is that it does not come with USM (:))))
