Who will make the switch for 7D ?

The VF, AF and video are very tempting. But the voice at the back of my head keeps saying "Better lenses, better lenses, better lenses.....)

Once you get a good set of lenses that work for you, money can go to a more satisfying camera body ;)

Agreed, but 5D's AF is not THAT bad, just that it's not suited for high speed/sports. Don't think there are cars on the streets that can do 300 MPH though.. Even the Bugatti Veyron, the fastest production street car (faster than an F1) can only do 253+mph.

hahah
that episode of top gear when they raced the veiron against the plane was legendary ;p

yes i love going off topic xD

hahah of course.. the 5d's AF is designed for studio shoots/general walkabout shooting... not for chasing cars running around streets at 300 miles an hour ;p

Is this good enough to cover F1 ? :dunno:

Taken with 5D MK1 AI Servo

I find that 5d AI Servo is much better than my previous 40D:thumbsup:

i dun think there's a need to upgrade for me. i got a 50D and i think it works just well for me. i dun need so much power in a camera.

But I believe 5D's AF is good enough to cover most events; but it may not overcome trickier situations - eg sports that has very vigorous human movement. F1 cars are generally easier to track as they are larger... just my 2cents...

Hi, 7D seems will be a good upgrade for those with xxxD series (2 of my frds with 350D targeting 7D now!).
For those with xxD series, the upgrade will be more on lens rather than body (depending on what you like to shoot).

IMHO, my next upgrade will be going to FF, no sense from 40D upgrade to 7D then 5DmkII. :nono:

good work you proved me wrong would you like a medal?
i'm not saying you can't shoot f1 with a 5d... hell you can shoot whatever the hell you want... its just harder in the context of the original question of the thread vs the 7d because the 5d only has the 9 af points instead of the 7d's 17 or whatever it is...

i mean i've been shooting my school playing soccer over the past few weeks with a 5d MkII and a lot of the photos turn out fine...

In what way is it not worth the money? I own a 40D mind you and I am seriously considering an upgrade to 7D due to a number of its features like better AF, ability to trigger external flashes, better noise handling (especially at high ISOs. With my 40D I try to limit myself to ISO 800 but that just won't work shooting in SG GP where I'm getting forced to shoot in ISO 1600 and even 3200). For noise you can refer to this comparison between 5D Mk2 and a production 7D.

I did consider 5D Mk2 before but was quite unsure about the AF performance (well, not everybody is happy with it), the quite hefty price tag, the lack of popup flash (I have 580EX IIs but I wouldn't want to bring it all the time) and the fact that I have APS-C lenses on my bag. The 7D seems to be a good fit for me (and maybe for others out there who share the same sentiment).

I'm sure there are some of us here who'd love to hear your opinion.

:Later,
Simply put, the 7D is not value-for-money TO ME. For me, the reason why FF is way better than 1.6x crop is because of the ability to use fast WAs such as the 16-35 and the N 14-24 f2.8. For crop sensors, you are stuck with the 10-22 to get a similar FOV. On crop bodies, there is absolutely no economical way to get a 24mm f1.4 FOV. FF also gives you better IQ and slightly better noise control over the 7D.

Many of the 7D specs and features are pretty unecessary IMHO. How often do you use pop-up flash? You can simply use a high ISO or pay a small sum of $ for the cute little 270EX.

With the $1.5k you save buy buying a 40D instead of a 7D, you can already buy the sharpest zoom lens I have tried which is the 70-200 f4L IS costing $1.5k secondhand or another 40D as a second body which saves you alot of missed shots by not having to switch lenses when shooting.

i didn't mean to be offend.

I see. You're looking at it from a lens usage and better IQ perspective. On my end, I'm looking at it from a body features perspective.. among other things, better noise handling, better AF, better LCD, off shoe flash capability, Video capability (nice to have) etc.

Many of the 7D specs and features are pretty unecessary IMHO. How often do you use pop-up flash? You can simply use a high ISO or pay a small sum of $ for the cute little 270EX.
To each his own. I don't see how you can use high iso when your subject is strongly backlit. (sure you can argue I can get my subjects to move/change places but you can't do that all the time).

Thanks for the inputs. :)

:Later,

With all the new features, is the 7D tagetting at currently the 5D/5D II users or the 40D/50D users ?

Who is more likely to make the switch ?

From the previews so far, noise control and IQ of 7D are pretty close to 5D mkII. I think for those using 30D and before, the features for 7D are rich enough for an upgrade. At least for me!!! :D

Also there is a rumor about 3D next year being the FF of 7D and I believe the price point will be higher than the current 5D mkII. For many, this might be what they wanted especially 5D fans but the price is probably too high for the rest. Thus, 7D is definitely a value for money deal for me at the moment. ;)

I already bought Canon 500D and under 5 years warranty. I am unable to buy Canon 7D:cry:

To YOU and YOU and YOU.

You don't need popup flash - others do. Same for the other features. Canon did not price the 7D more because of the popup flash.

So envy! 7D is in shops everywhere in Hong Kong today. :o

Hope to see it soon in Singapore. :sweatsm:

Yes, you've stated your position regarding the 7D many times already. We know what you think of the matter, but it does seem like you're trying to get more people to back you up or get more people to think your way. Everyone's needs are personal, though.

Can't wait to get my hands on one next week if its in Singapore then :)

Can't agree more with both of you, I think the 7D is for those upgrading from the XXXD, there is no point to upgrade from a XXD as it will be better to go for FF instead of paying more for another crop body. I am a 50D user and is looking to upgrade to the 5D2 eventually and rather save the money for it or to upgrade my lens.
